A 4.5x10 water filter is a big diameter cartridge in the shorter of the two standard lengths, four and a half inches across by ten inches long. It is the compact member of the big blue family, and it exists for one reason: it delivers the low pressure drop of a wide cartridge in half the height, which is what makes it fit where the tall version will not.

What the two numbers mean

The first is the cartridge diameter and the second is its length, and both must match the housing. Getting the length wrong leaves a gap the water flows past, and getting the diameter wrong is worse: a slim cartridge in a wide housing lets water bypass around it entirely, which looks like a working filter and filters nothing at all. Measure an existing cartridge rather than the housing, since housings vary in wall thickness and give no reliable clue to what they take.

Why the wide body matters more than the length

Pressure drop is what decides whether a house notices the filter, and it falls sharply with cartridge diameter because there is far more media area for the water to pass through. A wide short cartridge outperforms a narrow tall one on flow while holding a comparable amount of media. That is why big diameter is the standard recommendation for a whole house feed and slim housings are left to point of use duties, appliance feeds and reverse osmosis pre filtration.

When the short one is the right choice

Space, almost always. Where the filter goes into a crowded utility area, under a low ceiling, in a crawl space or into an existing bracket position, the twenty inch version simply will not come out for servicing, and clearance below the housing equal to the sump depth is not negotiable. The short version is also lighter to handle when full and cheaper per cartridge. The trade is a shorter service interval, since there is less media to fill, and on dirty water that difference is noticeable.

Getting the rest of the specification right

Port size is quoted separately and constrains flow independently: a wide housing with small ports throttles the supply whatever cartridge is inside it, so match ports to the service line. Choose a cartridge rating suited to the water rather than the tightest available. Fit isolation valves either side, a bypass around the assembly, and gauges before and after so the change interval is measured rather than guessed.
