RO system installation: what the job involves and who should do it

Installing a reverse osmosis system is three connections and a faucet: a tee into the cold feed, a drain line for the reject water, and a dedicated dispensing faucet on the sink, plus a tank hookup on storage models. For a standard under-sink kit that is a patient afternoon for a handy owner; for a whole-house unit it is a plumber's job with pre-treatment and a pump. The table below shows published prices for systems and installation options so you can weigh doing it yourself against booking the work.

The RO installation, step by step

  1. Place the faucet and mount the unit. Use an existing spare hole in the sink deck if you have one; otherwise drill the countertop, which is the one step worth hiring out on stone or composite surfaces. Mount the filter manifold on the cabinet wall with room below to drop cartridges out at service time, and position the tank where it will not fight the trash bin.
  2. Connect the feed and the drain. Shut off the cold supply, fit the feed adapter or self-piercing valve to the cold line, then clamp the drain saddle onto the sink drain above the trap and away from the disposal. The drain connection carries the reject water, and a sloppy saddle here is the source of most gurgles and callbacks.
  3. Fit the tank and run the tubing. Wrap the tank port threads, fit the tank valve, and run color-coded tubing between feed, unit, tank and faucet, cutting ends square and seating them fully into the quick-connect fittings. Kinked or half-seated tubing is the other classic install fault, and it shows up as slow flow or a fitting weeping days later.
  4. Pressurize, flush and leak-check. Open the supply, let the tank fill, then flush the first tankfuls to waste exactly as the manual directs to clear preservative and carbon fines from the new cartridges. Check every fitting with a dry paper towel after the first hours and again the next day, because slow weeps hide under cabinets until they become swollen floors.

DIY or professional: making the call honestly

Fit it yourself when the kit is a standard under-sink model, your sink has a spare faucet hole or a laminate top you are happy to drill, and the cold feed has an accessible shutoff. Kits ship with the adapters, tubing and saddle included, the manuals are genuinely followable, and no specialist tools are needed beyond a drill and an adjustable wrench.

Book a professional when the countertop is stone, the drain arrangement is unusual, the home runs on well water needing pre-treatment, or the system is a whole-house unit with a storage tank and repressurization pump. Ask the installer to itemize equipment against labor, and to include the faucet drilling and drain work in the quote rather than as day-of extras.

Whichever route you take, installation is also the moment to plan service: leave slack in the tubing, keep clearance under the manifold for cartridge changes, and note the install date on the housing. If your water has not been tested recently, our water testing guide is worth reading first, since results can change what gets installed upstream of the membrane.

Common questions

How long does RO system installation take?
A standard under-sink kit takes a careful owner an afternoon including the flush cycles, and an experienced plumber roughly an hour or two. Whole-house installations run much longer because of pre-treatment plumbing, tank placement and a pump, and are usually scheduled as a full-day job.
Does an RO system need a power outlet?
Traditional tank systems run entirely on water pressure and need no electricity. Tankless units, booster pumps for low-pressure homes and UV add-ons do need an outlet under the sink or nearby, so check which type you are installing before the day of the work.
What does professional installation cost?
Labor varies by market and by how much drilling and drain work the sink needs, which is why the table on this page shows published prices with a median of $1,531 rather than a guessed figure. Itemized quotes that separate equipment from labor are the ones worth comparing.
Can an RO unit connect to my fridge as well?
Yes, most under-sink systems can feed the refrigerator's ice maker and water dispenser with an add-on tee kit and a longer tubing run. Pressure at the end of a long run is the constraint, so check the fridge maker's minimum pressure requirement before adding the line.
