What anthracite filter media does in a filtration bed

Anthracite is hard, low ash coal crushed and graded for use as filtration media. In a household or commercial filter it is almost always the top layer of a layered bed, sitting above sand, and the reason is density rather than any chemical property. It is coarser and lighter than sand, and that combination is what makes a graded bed work.

Why the light coarse layer goes on top

In a layered bed you want water to meet the coarsest material first, so large particles are caught in the open upper voids and the finer material below is left to catch what got through. That spreads the load through the bed depth instead of blinding one surface. The reason it stays that way after every backwash is density: when the bed is fluidized and then allowed to settle, the lighter anthracite settles last and ends up on top, and the denser sand and garnet resettle beneath it. Layers restore themselves automatically, which is the whole elegance of the design.

Grading, and what it changes

Media is specified by effective size and by uniformity coefficient. Effective size describes the grain size, and a coarser anthracite gives lower pressure drop and greater dirt holding at the cost of some filtration fineness. Uniformity coefficient describes how similar the grains are to each other, and a tighter figure gives more predictable behaviour, less stratification within the layer and cleaner backwashing. Those two numbers, along with bed depth, are the real specification. Anthracite bought as generic media without a grading is a gamble in a vessel that is expensive to reload.

Anthracite alone, or as part of a bed

Used on its own in a single medium filter, anthracite gives a higher filtration rate and better dirt holding than sand at the same depth, and is chosen where flow matters more than the finest polish. Used above sand in a dual media bed, it gives most of that benefit while the sand layer provides the finer finishing. Adding a dense fine bottom layer such as garnet makes it a genuine multimedia bed. Which arrangement suits depends on the sediment load, the flow rate and how often you are willing to backwash.

Backwash requirements and replacement

Because the separation depends on fluidizing the bed and letting it resettle, the backwash flow rate is not negotiable: too little and the layers never separate properly, so the bed slowly packs and channels. Check the vessel's requirement against what the pump and supply can actually deliver before installing. Media is consumed slowly through attrition and is topped up or replaced when pressure drop no longer clears with a backwash.
