Water filter media is the material inside the tank or cartridge that does the actual work, and choosing it correctly matters far more than choosing a brand of housing. Each medium removes a specific class of problem by a specific mechanism, whether that is straining particles out, adsorbing chemicals onto a huge internal surface, oxidizing a dissolved metal into a solid, or exchanging one ion for another. Buy media against a test result and the system works.
Sediment media strain, they do not adsorb
Spun polypropylene, pleated polyester and graded sand or garnet beds work mechanically: anything larger than the pore size is held back. They are rated in microns, and the rating is the whole specification, since a coarse cartridge passes fine silt while a fine one clogs quickly on a dirty well. The usual answer on heavy sediment is a staged approach, a coarse cartridge first and a finer one behind it, so the cheap stage takes the load. Pleated cartridges have far more surface area than spun ones and some can be rinsed and reused. Sediment media are always the first stage, because everything downstream lasts longer behind them.
Carbon, catalytic carbon and KDF
Granular activated carbon adsorbs organic chemicals, chlorine and the compounds behind bad taste and odor onto an enormous internal surface area. Carbon block is the same material compressed, which adds mechanical filtration and gives longer contact time, which is why certified contaminant reduction claims are usually made on blocks. Catalytic carbon is treated to break down chloramine, which ordinary carbon handles poorly, and that distinction matters because many utilities have switched disinfectant. KDF is a copper and zinc alloy that converts chlorine chemically rather than adsorbing it, keeps working in hot water and inhibits bacterial growth in the bed, which is why it turns up in shower filters and as a carbon pre-stage.
Media for iron, manganese and acidic water
Iron and manganese need oxidizing media such as manganese greensand or the modern coated equivalents, which convert the dissolved metal into a solid particle and then trap it, releasing it during a backwash. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, so these are nuisance contaminants judged on staining and taste. Acidic well water is treated with calcite, a calcium carbonate medium that dissolves slowly to raise pH and stops copper pipe corroding, at the cost of adding hardness. Calcite is consumed rather than exhausted, so the bed needs topping up rather than replacing.
Ion exchange resin
Softening resin is a bed of small beads that swap sodium or potassium for calcium and magnesium and are recharged with brine. Anion resins do the same trick for negatively charged contaminants, which is how nitrate and tannin filters work. Resin is not consumed in normal use; it degrades slowly through mechanical attrition, chlorine attack and fouling by oxidized iron or organic matter. A bed that has stopped performing despite good brine draw is usually fouled rather than worn out, and a resin cleaner may recover it. How to tell a bed is finished
Different media fail differently, and that is the practical thing to know. Sediment cartridges announce themselves through falling pressure, which is why a pressure gauge either side of the housing is the cheapest diagnostic in the utility room. Carbon gives no pressure warning at all: it simply stops adsorbing, and the first sign is a returning chlorine taste or smell. Oxidizing iron media lose capacity gradually and start letting color through. Calcite runs down physically and you can see the level fall. Resin fails on capacity, giving hard water sooner and sooner after each regeneration. Match your monitoring to the mode of failure rather than to a calendar.
Questions people ask about water filter media
How long does filter media last?
It depends on the medium and the load, not the calendar. Carbon is judged by returning taste and odor, sediment by pressure drop, calcite by falling level.
Can I replace media myself in a tank system?
It is doable but heavy and messy: the valve comes off, the old bed is siphoned or tipped out, and the new media is funneled in with the riser tube plugged.
What is the difference between carbon and catalytic carbon?
Catalytic carbon is treated to break down chloramine, which standard activated carbon handles poorly. If your utility uses chloramine, that difference matters.
Does more media always mean better filtration?
