RO system cost: what you are actually paying for
RO system cost splits into two numbers: the price of the unit under your sink and the running cost of its filters and membrane over the years you own it. Both vary widely between vendors and formats. The table below shows current system prices from the vendors' own pages, and this page explains which features move the number and which are padding.

How to budget for an under-sink RO system
- Choose tank or tankless first. Traditional systems fill a pressurized tank so water is instantly available; tankless units make water on demand with a pump, freeing cabinet space and avoiding tank maintenance. Tankless generally costs more upfront but suits small cabinets and higher daily use.
- Count the stages you actually need. Every RO system has sediment and carbon pre-filters, the membrane, and a polishing filter. Extra stages such as remineralization or UV add cost, and they are worth it only if you want mineral taste restored or have a microbiological concern. More stages is not automatically better water.
- Price the consumables before buying. Look up each vendor's published replacement filter bundle and membrane price, then estimate a yearly figure from their stated schedule. Two systems with similar sticker prices in the table can differ meaningfully in what they cost to run over several years.
What moves an RO system's price
The membrane and housing quality set the floor, but the visible price differences in the table below come from format and features: tankless designs with pumps cost more than tank systems, smart faucets and filter-life indicators add cost, and remineralization stages add a cartridge line. None of those change the core job the membrane does.
Certification is a cost worth paying for. Systems tested against NSF/ANSI Standard 58 have had their contaminant reduction verified independently, which matters far more than stage count. A modestly priced certified system beats an elaborate uncertified one for anyone buying on water quality rather than gadgetry.
Running costs and the drain line question
Reverse osmosis sends a reject stream to the drain, so part of the running cost is simply water. Modern systems recover more and waste less than older designs, and vendors publish their recovery ratios. Filter changes are the other recurring cost, and skipping them shortens membrane life, which is the most expensive part to replace.
Installation is usually a homeowner-manageable job: the system tees off the cold line, connects to a dedicated faucet and reaches the drain through a saddle fitting. If your setup needs a new faucet hole drilled in stone countertop, budget for a professional. For whole-home treatment instead of one tap, see our whole house reverse osmosis cost page, which is a different project entirely.
Common questions
- Why do RO systems with similar specs differ in price?
- Format and features. Tankless pumps, smart monitoring, designer faucets and remineralization stages all add cost without changing the membrane's core performance. Certification status and consumable pricing are better reasons to pay more than gadget count.
- What is the typical price of an under-sink RO system?
- The current median across the vendors we track is $1,531, with simple tank systems below it and tankless or feature-heavy units above it. The table on this page shows the live spread from the vendors' own published pages.
- How much do RO replacement filters add over time?
- Enough to matter in the total cost of ownership. Pre-filters change on a regular published schedule and the membrane less often, so check each vendor's replacement bundle pricing before you buy rather than after the first year's reminder.
