The full cost of RO system ownership, year by year

The purchase price is the smallest interesting number in the cost of RO system ownership. Over the years you keep the unit, replacement pre-filters, post-filters and the occasional membrane accumulate into a figure that can rival or pass what you paid on day one, and the concentrate water an RO sends to the drain adds a quiet line to the utility bill. The table below shows current published purchase prices from the vendors we track; this page shows you how to project the rest of the bill before you commit to any of them.

Projecting your five-year RO cost

  1. Anchor on the purchase price. Start with the system price from the table below for each candidate. Note whether the listing includes the dedicated faucet, the storage tank and the first filter set, because a lean sticker with a separately sold tank and faucet is not actually the cheaper starting point it appears to be.
  2. Price the consumable schedule. List each cartridge the vendor says to replace and its interval: sediment and carbon pre-filters on a months-based cycle, the membrane and polishing filter on longer ones. Multiply out five years of packs at the vendor's own filter prices. This number varies between brands far more than the sticker does.
  3. Account for water efficiency. Every RO sends concentrate to the drain while it makes filtered water, and designs differ widely in how much. Vendors publish an efficiency or recovery figure for each model; a high-efficiency or tankless design can meaningfully cut the drain-side waste if your water rates make that worth chasing.
  4. Decide where generic filters are acceptable. Standard-format housings accept widely available compatible cartridges, which cuts the consumable bill; proprietary quick-change systems lock you into the brand's own packs. Neither is wrong, but the lock-in belongs in your five-year math, not discovered at the first replacement.

Where RO money actually goes over time

Think of an RO system as a small appliance with a subscription. The membrane, the expensive-sounding part, is actually the cheap part per year because it lasts so long when the pre-filters ahead of it are changed on schedule. Skipping cheap pre-filter changes to save money is the classic false economy: chlorine and sediment reach the membrane, the membrane fails early, and the saving is spent several times over.

Proprietary cartridge formats are the other quiet cost center. Twist-in quick-change filters are genuinely more convenient and less messy than standard housings, and vendors price that convenience into every replacement pack for a decade. If you are comfortable with a drip tray and ten extra minutes a year, standard-format systems are the cheaper marriage even when the purchase prices in the table look similar.

Ownership cost also depends on buying the right size of solution in the first place. If one drinking tap is the goal, an under-sink unit is the whole answer; adding capacity, stages or whole-house ambitions you will not use inflates both the sticker and every consumable behind it. Our reverse osmosis system guide covers matching scope to need before the money leaves your account.

Common questions

What does an RO system cost up front?
Published purchase prices across the vendors we track currently center on a median of $1,531, with tankless and high-output designs above it and basic tank systems below. The table on this page carries the live spread by vendor.
How much do RO replacement filters cost per year?
It depends on the model's cartridge count, format and schedule: standard-housing systems fed with compatible filters cost the least to run, proprietary quick-change systems the most. Price the vendor's own annual pack before buying, not after.
Does an RO system increase the water bill?
Somewhat: RO sends concentrate water to the drain as it filters, and the amount varies sharply by design. Modern high-efficiency and tankless units waste far less than older ones, and for most households the effect is small next to cartridge costs.
How long does an RO system last?
The hardware routinely serves a decade or more; what expires are cartridges on their schedules and eventually fittings and the tank bladder. Faithful pre-filter changes are the single biggest factor in how long the costly membrane lasts.
