How to remove chlorine from tap water at every point you need it

Removing chlorine is straightforward once you know two things: whether your utility uses free chlorine or chloramine, and how many taps you want treated. Activated carbon does the work in every case, but the type of carbon and where you install it change completely depending on those two answers.

Check the disinfectant first

Free chlorine and chloramine behave differently and need different media. Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report naming the disinfectant it uses, and the EPA maintains a finder for those reports. Free chlorine is volatile and easy to remove. Chloramine, chlorine bonded to ammonia, was adopted precisely because it persists, and standard carbon struggles with it. Ten minutes reading your report saves you buying a cartridge that underperforms and blaming the equipment.

Point of use, the cheapest place to start

A carbon pitcher, a faucet mount or an under sink cartridge treats the water you drink and cook with, which is the only water most people taste. Pitchers are the cheapest and have the shortest cartridge life. Faucet mounts give more capacity and a decent flow. Under sink cartridges give the most capacity and the longest interval, at the price of a plumbing connection. Chlorine is inhaled in a hot shower as well as tasted at the kitchen tap, and that is the usual reason people move to point of entry treatment. Whole house options come as large cartridge housings, which are simple and need cartridge changes, or as backwashing media tanks, which hold a much larger bed of carbon and flush themselves periodically. Tanks cost more up front, run longer between interventions and need a drain and a power outlet. Cartridges suit smaller homes and lighter chlorine loads.

Catalytic carbon for chloramine

Catalytic carbon is activated carbon processed to increase its surface reactivity, and it is the standard answer where the utility uses chloramine. Standard carbon adsorbs free chlorine readily but reduces chloramine slowly, so a cartridge sized for chlorine will disappoint if chloramine is what you have. When specifying a whole house system, state the disinfectant to the vendor and ask which media they are quoting, because it is the single detail most likely to decide whether you are satisfied.

Where reverse osmosis fits in

A reverse osmosis system removes chlorine too, though mostly in the carbon prefilters rather than at the membrane. Those prefilters exist partly to protect the membrane, since chlorine attacks the membrane material directly and a neglected prefilter can ruin an expensive element. If you are buying reverse osmosis for other reasons, chlorine removal comes with it. If chlorine taste is your only complaint, carbon alone is cheaper, faster flowing and simpler. Questions people ask about how to remove chlorine from tap water

Does letting water stand remove chlorine?

Free chlorine does dissipate from an open or covered container over several hours, especially in the refrigerator. Chloramine does not meaningfully dissipate that way, which is why the disinfectant matters.

Do I need a shower filter as well?

Only if you are treating at the point of use. A whole house carbon system already handles every shower in the house, so a shower filter is a targeted alternative rather than an addition.

How often do carbon cartridges need replacing?

Follow the capacity and calendar rating printed for that specific cartridge. Carbon exhausts silently, so a cartridge past its rating keeps flowing normally while doing progressively less.

Will removing chlorine make my water unsafe?

The disinfectant residual protects water in the distribution system, and once water is in your house it has done its job. Keep filters maintained so the filter itself does not become a place bacteria grow.
