Reverse osmosis filter cost: what actually drives it

Reverse osmosis filter cost splits into three parts: the system you buy once, the installation if you do not do it yourself, and the cartridge and membrane replacements you buy for as long as you run it. The table below shows current reverse osmosis pricing from the vendors we track, and this page explains which features move a system up or down that table and which mostly move the marketing copy.

How to price a reverse osmosis system honestly

  1. Compare systems by what recurs. Two systems with similar sticker prices can differ sharply once you price a year of prefilters, postfilters and the periodic membrane. Standard-size cartridges keep that recurring cost competitive; proprietary ones lock you to the maker's price sheet, so read the replacement page before the product page.
  2. Decide tank or tankless. Tank systems are the classic layout: cheaper, proven, but they give up cabinet space and refill at their own pace. Tankless systems make water on demand, save the cabinet and typically cost more up front while needing power at the sink. Neither is wrong; the cabinet and the budget decide.
  3. Count only stages that earn a place. Stage count is a favorite marketing number. Sediment, carbon, membrane and a polishing postfilter are the working core; remineralization is a taste preference worth paying for only if you want it; further stages add cartridge cost more reliably than they add water quality.
  4. Price the install path. Under-sink installation is a competent DIY job: a feed adapter, a drain saddle and a faucet hole. Pay a plumber where the countertop is stone and needs drilling, where a line runs to the fridge, or where local code says so, and get that quote before buying rather than after.

Under-sink versus whole-house reverse osmosis cost

Under-sink units are the sensible default because reverse osmosis is slow, deliberate treatment best aimed at drinking and cooking water. Whole-house reverse osmosis exists for water problems severe enough to justify treating every gallon, and its cost is a different category: large membranes, storage, repressurization and real maintenance. If a whole-house quote is on your table, confirm with testing that a targeted system plus an under-sink unit cannot solve the same problem for far less; our well water testing guide covers establishing that baseline.

Wastewater ratio is the quiet running cost. Every reverse osmosis system sends reject water to the drain, and efficient designs send meaningfully less. On metered city water this is a modest utility line item; on a low-yield well it can be the factor that decides between models, so treat the maker's published efficiency figures as part of the price.

Common questions

What does a reverse osmosis filter cost per year to run?
The recurring cost is prefilters and postfilters on the maker's schedule plus a membrane every few years, and it varies most by whether cartridges are standard or proprietary. The table above puts current replacement pricing beside each system.
Why do reverse osmosis system prices vary so much?
Tank versus tankless design, stage count, standard versus proprietary cartridges, pump and remineralization options, and brand. The working core is the same physics everywhere, which is why the replacement-cartridge economics deserve more attention than the sticker.
Is reverse osmosis worth the cost over a carbon filter?
For chlorine taste alone, carbon is cheaper and sufficient. Reverse osmosis earns its cost when the target is dissolved solids, or contaminants carbon does not hold well, which is a question your water report or a lab test answers before the purchase.
What is a typical price for an under-sink reverse osmosis system?
Current vendor pricing is in the table above, with $1,531 as the midpoint of the systems we track. Installation labor, where used, is additional and quoted locally.
