How to get from a bad well to a working system
- Test the well properly. Everything downstream depends on a real test: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, sulfur odor, sediment, and bacteria at minimum. A system chosen without numbers is a guess, and well water chemistry varies enough between neighbors that a friend's setup is not evidence for yours.
- Order the treatment train. Stages have a correct sequence. Sediment filtration comes first to protect everything behind it, oxidation or air injection handles iron and sulfur, a softener addresses hardness, an acid neutralizer corrects low pH before it eats the plumbing, and UV disinfection goes last so it sees clear water.
- Size and install for the well. Well systems are sized to the pump's flow rate, not just the household's. A backwashing tank that exceeds what the pump can deliver never cleans itself properly. A good dealer checks pump output before quoting, and plumbs a bypass so the house still runs during service.
Matching the system to the problem
Iron and sulfur are the classic well complaints, and air-injection oxidizing filters are the usual answer because they handle both without chemical feeds. Clear-water iron in modest amounts can also be caught by a softener, but heavy or already-oxidized iron will foul softener resin, which is why the sediment and oxidation stages sit in front.
Bacteria and nitrate change the conversation. A failed coliform test calls for fixing the well itself, shock chlorination, and then continuous UV disinfection; nitrate is typically handled at the drinking tap with reverse osmosis rather than at the whole-house level. Neither problem is solved by a carbon filter, however good it makes the water taste.
Sediment-only and taste-only wells are the cheap wins. A spin-down or cartridge sediment filter plus a carbon stage covers grit and odor without a full train. Do not pay for stages your test says you do not need: the table above lists single-purpose and combination systems separately for exactly that reason.
Buying it as a package or building it in stages
Vendors sell well packages that bundle sediment, iron, softening, and UV in one order, and the bundle discount is real, but only if every stage matches a measured problem. Building in stages, starting with sediment and the worst confirmed contaminant, spreads the cost and lets you verify each fix before adding the next.

- What is the best filtration system for well water with iron?
- For most wells an air-injection oxidizing filter is the standard answer: it precipitates dissolved iron and traps it in the media bed, and handles sulfur odor at the same time. Heavy iron loads or iron bacteria need stronger oxidation and a sediment stage in front.
- Do I need UV if my well test came back clean?
- Not necessarily, but wells are not static: flooding, casing damage, or nearby septic problems can introduce bacteria later. Many owners add UV as cheap insurance and retest annually. If a test ever finds coliform, UV plus shock chlorination is the response.
- Will one system fix iron, hardness, and smell together?
