How to choose and use a water test kit properly
- Start from your supply type. City water is disinfected and monitored, and your utility publishes an annual quality report, so home testing there targets what happens after the main: lead from household plumbing, chlorine taste, hardness. A private well has no monitoring behind it at all, so the owner's test is the only data that exists.
- Pick the tier that matches the decision. Use strips and digital TDS or hardness meters for screening and for watching trends after installing treatment. Use a certified mail-in lab kit whenever the answer will drive a purchase or a safety call: lead, bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and anything else where the precise level changes what you do.
- Sample the way the instructions say. Results are only as good as the sample: first-draw versus flushed samples answer different questions about lead, bacteria bottles carry a preservative and must not be rinsed, and every kit states a holding time. Read the sampling card before opening anything, not after the bottle is filled.
- Act on the result, then retest. Match any confirmed problem to its treatment class: filtration, softening, reverse osmosis or disinfection, and test again after installation to verify the fix worked on your actual water. A single clean result is a snapshot; well owners in particular should make testing a recurring habit.
What strips can tell you, and what they cannot
Strip kits are genuinely useful for what they are: a fast, cheap read on chlorine, hardness, pH and a handful of other parameters, good for screening a new home, checking a softener's output or satisfying curiosity. What they cannot do is measure the contaminants that matter most at the low levels that matter: lead, arsenic and PFAS act at concentrations far below a color chart's resolution, and bacteria testing requires culturing or lab methods, not a dip. Treating a clean strip as proof of safety is the most common mistake in home water testing.
Digital meters occupy a middle tier: a TDS meter reads total dissolved solids usefully for watching a reverse osmosis membrane's health, and hardness meters help tune a softener. But TDS is a bulk number, not a safety measure; low TDS water can still carry a problem and mineral-rich water can be perfectly safe.
Well owners need the lab tier, on a schedule
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody upstream of a well owner is testing anything; the kit you buy is the entire monitoring program. - They are honest screening tools for chlorine, hardness and pH, but their color-chart resolution cannot detect lead, arsenic or bacteria at the levels that matter. Use strips to screen and monitor, and a certified lab test for any safety decision.
- How often should a well owner test drinking water?
- Make lab testing a regular annual habit for bacteria and nitrate at minimum, and retest after floods, nearby construction, well work or any change in taste, odor or color. No agency tests a private well on the owner's behalf, so the schedule is yours.
- Do home kits detect lead or PFAS reliably?
- Only the mail-in variety, where you collect the sample and a certified laboratory analyzes it. Instant strips lack the sensitivity for either. For PFAS specifically, laboratory analysis with strict sampling protocols is the only meaningful option.
