How iron removal gets done right

  1. Confirm the form and the level. Clear water that stains fixtures orange points to dissolved ferrous iron; tinted or gritty water points to ferric particles; reddish slime in the toilet tank points to iron bacteria. A lab panel confirms which you have and at what concentration, along with the pH that decides which media will work.
  2. Choose the treatment for that form. Air-injection and oxidizing-media filters convert dissolved iron to particles and trap them, handling most well-water iron in one tank. Sediment filtration catches ferric particles that already exist. Iron bacteria need disinfection of the well itself before any filter will hold.
  3. Place it ahead of everything else. The iron filter goes first in the treatment train, after the pressure tank, so downstream equipment sees iron-free water. Softeners, carbon filters, and RO membranes all foul on iron, which makes the iron stage the bodyguard for every dollar spent behind it.
  4. Plan the maintenance the media needs. Oxidizing media backwashes itself on a schedule and needs adequate well flow to do it properly; some media beds also need periodic regeneration or replacement. Confirm your well can supply the backwash rate the spec sheet asks for before buying the tank.

Will a whole-house carbon filter remove iron?
No. Carbon targets chlorine, taste, and organic compounds; iron passes through and eventually fouls the bed. Iron needs oxidation and filtration, or ion exchange in light cases, ahead of any carbon stage.
