An inline deionizer is a cartridge of ion exchange resin on a hose line, and it is the only attachment that genuinely stops water spots, because it is the only one that removes the dissolved minerals that cause them. It is also the most expensive to run by a wide margin, and understanding why decides whether it fits your situation.
Why nothing else stops spotting
Water spots are dissolved calcium and magnesium left behind when water evaporates from a surface. A sediment cartridge traps particles and has nothing to grip on a dissolved ion. Carbon adsorbs organic compounds and chlorine and does not remove minerals either. Only ion exchange removes them, by swapping them for hydrogen and hydroxide that combine into more water, so what leaves the cartridge has essentially nothing dissolved in it and dries leaving no mark at all.
The running cost, and why it varies so much
Resin capacity is consumed in proportion to how much was dissolved in the water going in, so the same cartridge treats a large volume on soft water and a small one on hard. The USGS classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above that, and a cartridge on very hard water can exhaust several times faster than the same one on soft. That variation is why quoted cartridge lives are unreliable.
Making it last longer
Softening the feed first is the standard answer where volume matters, since a softener removes calcium and magnesium cheaply using salt and leaves the resin dealing with a much smaller load, typically extending its life several fold. Beyond that, use the deionizer only for the final rinse rather than for washing, which is where the water actually needs to be mineral free, and use untreated water for everything up to that point. That single habit often halves the resin consumption.
Knowing when it is spent
Exhaustion gives no visible sign, so a conductivity or TDS meter is not optional: readings climb as the bed nears the end, and the water stops leaving surfaces clean before anyone notices. Some cartridges use color changing indicator resin, which is convenient and less precise.
