Sizing a sand media filter on a well is a matching exercise with an unusual constraint: the vessel has to be large enough to treat the household's flow and small enough that the well can backwash it. On a good well that is easy. On a modest or low yield well the backwash requirement is what sets the size, and ignoring it produces a bed that packs solid.

The two flow figures

Service flow is what the household draws through the bed, and too small a vessel means water passes too quickly for the media to capture properly, so filtration falls off exactly when demand is highest. Backwash flow is what the vessel needs to fluidize the bed and carry trapped material to drain, and it rises sharply with diameter. A vessel large enough for comfortable service flow may demand a backwash rate the well cannot sustain, and that conflict is the whole of the sizing problem.

What the well can actually deliver

Check the pump's output and, on a low yield well, the recovery rate, because backwash draws a steady flow for several minutes rather than a brief peak. A pump that comfortably serves a shower may not sustain that, and a slowly recovering well may be drawn down doing it, which risks running the pump dry. Ask for the well's yield figures if you have them, and test by running a hose at the required rate for the backwash duration and watching what happens.

When the numbers do not work

Three options. A smaller diameter vessel, accepting a lower service flow and possibly two in parallel. Scheduling backwash for the middle of the night when nothing else draws, which helps only if the well itself can supply the rate. Or a storage tank and booster pump arrangement, which decouples the house from the well's instantaneous output and lets the backwash draw from storage. The third is the proper answer on a genuinely low yield well and it changes the whole system design.

What the filter will and will not do

It removes suspended solids and turbidity through the depth of a graded bed and cleans itself by backwashing, which suits a continuous fine sediment load that would consume cartridges weekly.
