House water filter replacement: cartridges, media and timing

House water filter replacement means different work depending on what is on your main line: cartridge systems get new elements on a short cycle, backwashing media tanks run for years before a rebed, and UV systems need an annual lamp regardless of how the water looks. This page sorts the replacement schedule by system type, and the table below shows current replacement cartridge and media pricing from the vendors we track.

How to replace a whole-house cartridge

  1. Bypass and relieve pressure. Close the inlet and outlet valves or set the bypass, then press the housing's pressure-relief button or open a downstream faucet until flow stops. A whole-house sump under mains pressure will fight the wrench and soak the floor if this step is skipped.
  2. Swap, inspect, lubricate. Drop the sump with the housing wrench, remove the old cartridge, and look at it: what it caught tells you whether the micron rating and change interval are right. Wipe the sump, check the o-ring, apply food-grade silicone grease and seat the new cartridge on its stand pipe.
  3. Repressurize slowly and check. Hand-tighten the sump, open the inlet valve slowly to fill, relieve trapped air, then open the outlet and inspect for weeping over several minutes. Overtightening distorts the o-ring, so snug plus a small turn with the wrench is the target, not maximum force.
  4. Log the date and the pressure. Write the date on the housing and, if you have gauges, note the pressure drop across the fresh filter. The gauge reading, compared over the weeks that follow, turns the next replacement from guesswork into a number you can watch.

Replacement schedules by system type

Cartridge systems carry the shortest cycle: sediment and carbon elements are consumables, changed on the maker's interval or sooner when pressure drop or returning taste says so. Sediment-heavy wells can halve the printed interval, and a house that keeps eating cartridges is telling you it wants a coarser prefilter or a backwashing unit instead, which is a cheaper conclusion to reach early than late.

Backwashing tanks, softeners, iron systems and carbon tanks clean themselves and replace nothing routinely, but their media is aging all the same: carbon exhausts, softener resin degrades under chlorine or iron, and oxidizing media depletes. Years in, the replacement is a rebed rather than a cartridge, and the table above includes media by volume for exactly that job. UV systems are the strict ones: the lamp must be replaced on the maker's annual schedule because its output fades long before it stops glowing, and the quartz sleeve gets cleaned or replaced alongside.

Signs the interval you are using is wrong

Falling shower pressure that recovers after each change means the interval is too long or the cartridge too fine. A cartridge coming out barely dirty means money spent early for nothing, and the interval can stretch. Returning chlorine taste on city water means the carbon stage is exhausting ahead of schedule. On a well, any change in what the cartridge catches is information: new sand or grit is worth a look at the well itself, and our well water testing guide covers when a change in the water deserves a retest.

Common questions

How often should a whole house water filter be replaced?
Cartridge elements follow the maker's interval, shortened when pressure drop or taste says so; media tanks rebed after years, not months; UV lamps are annual on the maker's schedule regardless of appearance.
Can I replace a house water filter myself?
Cartridge changes are routine homeowner work with the housing wrench and ten careful minutes. Media rebeds are heavier DIY, and valve or plumbing faults during a change are the point to call a pro rather than improvise.
Why does my house filter clog so fast?
The supply carries more sediment than the cartridge is sized for. Add a coarser prefilter or spin-down separator ahead of it, or step the main cartridge coarser; on wells, fast clogging that is new can signal a change at the well.
What does house water filter replacement cost per year?
It depends on stage count and cartridge type; the table above shows current vendor pricing, with $1,531 as the midpoint. Standard-size housings keep the recurring cost competitive across brands.
