How much does a whole house water filtration system cost over its life
How much a whole house water filtration system costs depends on what is in the quote as much as what is in the tank. The table below carries local installed prices; this page is about reading a quote line by line so you can tell whether two numbers describe the same job.
- median advertised water softener system price

How to compare two quotes properly
- Line up the hardware first. Note the system class, the number of stages, the vessel size and the media type on each quote. If one proposes a backwashing tank and the other a cartridge bank, you are looking at two different products and the prices are not comparable on their face.
- Separate labor from parts. Ask each company to split the install labor from the equipment. Drain runs, an added electrical circuit, repiping to reach the loop and disposal of an old unit are labor items, and they explain most large gaps between otherwise similar quotes.
- Check what happens to the water test. A quote that names the contaminants it is designed to reduce, at the levels your report showed, is a specification. A quote that lists a product name and a price is a sales document, and it gives you nothing to hold anyone to afterward.
- Price the consumables for ten years. Get the replacement interval and part number for every cartridge, media bed and lamp, then multiply out. Two systems that look similar on install day can diverge substantially once frequent cartridge changes are added to one side of the comparison.
- Confirm warranty and service terms. Find out what the warranty covers, whether it survives a house sale, what voids it, and whether the installer offers service afterward. A cheaper install from a company with no service arm becomes expensive the first time the valve needs a technician.
What actually drives the installed price
The dominant factor is the water itself. City water with a chlorine taste complaint needs a single carbon stage, while a well with iron, hardness and a bacteria history needs four separate pieces of equipment plumbed in sequence. Everything else, including brand, is a smaller influence on the total than the number of problems your test found.
After the water comes the location. An accessible main line with a floor drain and an outlet nearby is a straightforward day of work. A crawl space, a long drain run or a utility area that needs a new circuit adds labor that has nothing to do with the equipment, which is why identical systems are quoted at different prices in different houses.
The bill that arrives after the install
Ownership cost is prefilters, media, lamps, salt where a softener is in the train, and the water a backwashing system sends to drain. None of these is dramatic on its own and together they are the reason a system chosen purely on the lowest quote can cost more across a decade than one specified properly at the start.
Build the comparison over the period you will actually own the house. Ask each supplier in the table below for the total of the consumables over five and ten years alongside the install price, and be wary of any answer that cannot be given as part numbers and intervals.
Common questions
- What does a whole house filtration system cost installed?
- Local installed prices centre on $1,531. Single stage city water systems come in below that, and multi stage well systems with softening and disinfection sit above it.
- Why is one quote double another?
- Almost always scope. One includes pretreatment, permits, drain work and disposal of the old unit, the other prices the filter alone. Compare line items rather than totals.
- Are annual service plans worth buying?
- They are if they include the consumables you would buy anyway and a technician who checks the valve and tests the output. They are poor value when they only cover a visit with no parts.
