How to use a TDS reading properly
- Take a baseline reading from your cold tap. Run the cold tap briefly, rinse the meter cup, and record the reading with the date. A single number means little on its own; a baseline you can compare future readings against is where the meter starts earning its price.
- Compare against your water report, not against a scare chart. Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report, or a lab test on a well, tells you what is actually dissolved in the water. Read the TDS number alongside that report, because the report names the substances and the meter only counts them.
- Use the meter to verify treatment, especially reverse osmosis. The best use of a TDS meter is checking an RO system: measure the tap water and the RO water, and a strong drop confirms the membrane is working. When the RO reading creeps back toward the tap reading, the membrane is due for replacement.
- Retest on a schedule and after any change. Reread quarterly and after events: a new filter, plumbing work, a flood near a well, or a sudden taste change. Movement in the number is a prompt to investigate with a real test, not a diagnosis by itself.
Why there is no single perfect TDS number
TDS is a bulk measurement: the meter reads electrical conductivity and converts it to an estimate of everything dissolved. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorides and any dissolved contaminants all register together. That is why a low reading is not proof of safety and a moderate reading is not proof of a problem: identity matters, and the meter cannot see identity.
Taste is where TDS speaks most directly. Very low readings taste flat to most people because the minerals that carry flavor are gone, and very high readings taste heavy, salty or bitter. Between the extremes, preference varies by person and by what the dissolved solids actually are, which is why bottled mineral waters span a wide range and all find buyers.
When a TDS reading should send you to a real test
