Which kind of TDS water filter actually lowers dissolved solids

Total dissolved solids is the combined weight of everything dissolved in your water: calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, nitrate and the rest. Only a few technologies reduce it, because most filters are built to catch particles or adsorb organic chemicals, and dissolved ions slip past both. Knowing which is which saves buying a filter that cannot possibly change the reading.

Why ordinary filters change nothing

A sediment cartridge is a mechanical strainer, so it stops particles far larger than a dissolved ion and leaves the reading where it found it. Activated carbon works by adsorption and is very good at organic molecules, chlorine and taste compounds, but it has almost no affinity for the simple charged ions that make up most of the dissolved solids load. If you install either one and then measure, expect the meter to read effectively the same. That is the filter working correctly, not failing.

Reverse osmosis is the practical answer

A reverse osmosis membrane rejects the large majority of dissolved ions by forcing water through a semipermeable film under pressure and sending the concentrate to drain. It is the only mainstream household technology that reduces dissolved solids across the board, which is why the drinking water tap in a house with mineral heavy or brackish water is usually fed by one. Systems are sold in staged configurations with published production ratings, so you can match capacity to how much treated water the household draws.

Deionization and distillation

Deionization uses mixed bed resin to exchange both positive and negative ions for hydrogen and hydroxide, producing water with almost no dissolved solids. It is common as a polishing stage after reverse osmosis and in aquarium and laboratory setups, but the resin exhausts quickly on raw tap water and is expensive to run as a primary treatment. Distillation boils water and condenses the vapor, leaving dissolved solids in the boiler; it is slow, energy hungry and needs descaling, but it is thorough and needs no pressure.

Softeners move the number sideways

An ion exchange softener trades calcium and magnesium for sodium. Hardness falls to near nothing, scaling stops, and soap starts working, but the total dissolved solids reading barely moves because ions have been swapped rather than removed. People often install a softener, measure, and conclude the unit is broken. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do. If both scale and dissolved solids need to come down, the usual arrangement is a softener for the house and reverse osmosis at the drinking tap.

Is lowering TDS actually the goal?

Dissolved solids is an aggregate, and an aggregate is a poor safety measure: pleasant mineral water reads high while a bacterially contaminated well can read low. Reduce it when high mineral content is spoiling taste, feeding scale, or getting in the way of coffee, aquariums or humidifiers. Does a carbon filter reduce TDS?

Essentially no. Carbon adsorbs organic molecules and chlorine but leaves the dissolved mineral ions that make up most of the reading in place.

What TDS reading should I aim for?

There is no target worth chasing. Taste preference and scaling behavior matter more, and the aggregate number says nothing about safety on its own.

Can a whole house system lower TDS?

Only whole house reverse osmosis can, and it is a substantial installation with a storage tank, repressurization pump and a drain for concentrate.

Why does my RO water still show a reading?

Membranes reject most but not all ions, and some systems add minerals back after the membrane for taste. A steadily rising reading signals a failing membrane.
