What the number cannot decide
Whether the water is safe, because many contaminants that matter are dangerous far below the concentrations that move the reading, and because harmless dissolved limestone and something unwanted can produce the same figure. Whether the water is hard, since the USGS defines hardness specifically as dissolved calcium and magnesium, classified from soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate through to very hard above 180, while a conductivity meter counts everything dissolved. And whether a softener is working, since it swaps minerals rather than removing them.
Where the reading comes from matters
Sample at the point that answers your question. A reading at the kitchen tap includes everything the household plumbing contributes. A reading taken from a reverse osmosis system after the storage tank includes whatever the tank and the polishing filter have done, which is why membrane checks are taken before the tank.
