How to choose and use a TDS meter
- Buy for the features that keep readings honest. The meaningful differences between meters are automatic temperature compensation, since conductivity moves with temperature, the ability to calibrate against a reference solution, and a stable, readable display. A meter without temperature compensation drifts with every season and every glass.
- Establish your baselines. Measure your raw tap water several times on different days and note the range, then measure the output of any treatment you own. The absolute number matters less than the pattern: your raw baseline, your treated baseline, and how far today's reading sits from each is the entire diagnostic method.
- Use it to watch the RO membrane. Check the reverse osmosis output on a routine schedule and log the numbers. A working membrane holds a large, steady gap below your raw water's reading; a gap that keeps narrowing means the membrane is aging out, and a sudden jump means a seal or o-ring is letting raw water bypass the membrane.
- Calibrate and maintain the instrument. Check the meter against a calibration reference solution periodically and adjust if your model allows it, keep the electrode pins clean and dry between uses, and replace batteries before readings turn erratic. An uncalibrated meter that drifts slowly will happily lie to you in small increments.
What a TDS reading actually tells you, and what it cannot
Total dissolved solids is a bulk estimate of everything conductive dissolved in the water: hardness minerals, salts and metals together, inferred from conductivity.
