The cost of reverse osmosis: purchase, installation and the years after

The cost of reverse osmosis has three parts: the system itself, the installation, and the cartridge and membrane replacements that continue for as long as you own it. The purchase price gets all the attention, but over several years the consumables usually matter as much. The table below shows verified system prices from the vendors' own published pages, and this page explains where the rest of the money goes so you can compare complete costs rather than stickers.

How to work out your true RO cost

  1. Anchor the system price against the table. Start from the verified vendor prices above rather than a marketplace listing or an installer's bundled quote. Under-sink tank systems, tankless units and countertop models occupy different bands, and knowing the band for your preferred design keeps every later quote honest.
  2. Price the installation for your kitchen. A standard under-sink install with an existing spare faucet hole is quick work, DIY or paid. Drilling granite for the faucet, adding an outlet for a tankless pump, or running a line to the fridge each adds labor, so list those extras before asking for quotes.
  3. Add up a year of cartridges and a membrane cycle. Prefilters and postfilters change on a schedule measured in months, membranes in years. Look up your candidate system's refill kit price and interval on the vendor page, multiply out a full year, and carry a share of the membrane cost. That figure separates finalists better than sticker price.

What moves RO cost up and down

Design is the biggest lever. Countertop units cost the least and install nowhere, under-sink tank systems hold the middle, and tankless systems with pumps and leak sensors carry the top of the point-of-use range. Whole-house RO is a different project entirely, with its own page: our whole house reverse osmosis cost guide covers it.

Feed water is the second lever. City water usually needs nothing extra, but well water commonly needs sediment or iron pretreatment ahead of the membrane, and skipping it does not save money: it converts pretreatment cost into premature membrane replacements, which is the more expensive way to pay.

The quiet third lever is reject water. Every RO unit sends concentrate down the drain as it filters, and designs differ meaningfully in how much. On metered city water it is a small but real running cost; tankless designs generally waste less per gallon produced than older tank systems.

Where saving money works and where it backfires

Savings that work: installing an under-sink unit yourself, choosing a system with affordable standard-size cartridges, and skipping stages you do not need, since remineralization and UV are options rather than requirements for most city households.

Savings that backfire: uncertified clone cartridges inside a certified system, stretching cartridge intervals until taste degrades, and buying an unbranded system whose refills vanish from the market in two years. The refill ecosystem is part of what the purchase price buys.

Common questions

What does a reverse osmosis system cost up front?
It depends on design: countertop, under-sink tank, and tankless units occupy rising price bands. The table on this page lists verified prices from the vendors' own pages, with a current median of $1,531 across listed systems.
What are the ongoing costs of reverse osmosis?
Prefilter and postfilter changes on a months-based schedule, membrane replacement on a years-based one, and a small amount of reject water down the drain. Vendors publish refill kit prices, so a full year can be priced before you buy.
Is professional installation necessary for RO?
Not usually for under-sink systems: connections are push-fit and the job is DIY-friendly if a faucet hole exists. Pay a professional when the countertop needs drilling, the fridge needs a line, or you simply want the leak risk on someone else's insurance.
Is reverse osmosis worth the cost?
If your test shows dissolved contaminants like lead, nitrates or PFAS, RO is one of the most cost-effective household responses. If your water tests clean and tastes fine, the case is weaker, and a simple carbon filter may be all the kitchen needs.
