Tubing check valve: where it goes in a water treatment line

A tubing check valve lets water travel one way along a small diameter line and closes if it tries to come back. In home water treatment that matters most on chemical injection lines, reverse osmosis drain and feed lines, and appliance connections, where reverse flow would either contaminate a solution tank or wreck a pump.

What the valve is protecting against

Any line running from a pump or a supply into pressurized plumbing can see flow reverse when the pump stops and the main line is still under pressure. On a chlorine or soda ash injection line, reverse flow pushes pressurized water back up the tubing into the solution tank, which dilutes the chemical, can overflow the drum and lets the pump lose its prime. On a small pump the same backflow spins components the wrong way. The check valve is the cheapest part in the assembly and the one whose failure causes the most confusing symptoms, because a system with a stuck check valve looks like it is running normally while dosing nothing.

The common types you will meet

Inline spring check valves are the most common on quarter inch and three eighths tubing: a small spring holds a poppet shut until forward pressure opens it. Duckbill and umbrella valves use a flexible elastomer that opens under forward flow and seals flat under reverse, and they suit very low pressure applications. Ball check valves rely on a ball seating against a seat and are usually fitted vertically. Foot valves sit at the bottom of a solution tank to keep the suction line full when the pump idles. Injection check valves combine the check function with the fitting that pierces the pipe wall at the injection point.

Sizing, orientation and materials

Match the valve to the outside diameter of the tubing, not to the pipe thread of whatever it screws into, and use the same compression or push connect system as the rest of the run so ferrules seat properly. Every check valve carries a flow arrow: fitted backwards it simply blocks the line, and on a feed pump that reads as a dead pump. Cracking pressure matters too, since a valve that needs more pressure to open than a gravity fed line can supply will never open at all. Material compatibility is the last check: hypochlorite solution attacks some elastomers and metals, so specify a valve rated for the chemical it will actually see.

Reverse osmosis and appliance lines

Under sink reverse osmosis systems use a check valve on the membrane housing outlet so tank pressure cannot push water back through the membrane, and the automatic shutoff valve depends on that seal to stop production when the tank is full. A system that runs to drain continuously often has a failed check valve rather than a failed membrane. Refrigerator and ice maker lines use a check to stop appliance water siphoning back into the household plumbing. Where a treatment system connects to a potable supply, local plumbing codes may require a full backflow preventer rather than a simple check valve, so confirm before you rely on one.

Testing and replacing one

Isolate and depressurize the line, then remove the valve and blow gently through it in each direction: it should pass one way and seal the other. Scale, chemical crystals and grit on the seat are the usual failure, and on a chlorination line the injection fitting is the first place hardness deposits build. Check valves are consumables, so replace rather than clean any valve that will not seal cleanly.
