A household reverse osmosis unit has four or five valves, and almost every complaint people bring to us traces back to one of them. Learn which valve sits where in the flow path and the fault list gets short: no water, slow water, a drain that runs forever, or a tank that will not fill.
The feed valve is the first thing to check
The feed adapter taps the cold supply under the sink and sends pressurized water into the first prefilter. If it is half closed, partly clogged with pipe scale, or the little saddle needle is fouled, the whole system starves. Symptoms look like a dying membrane: weak flow at the faucet, a tank that takes all day to fill. Shut the feed, open the RO faucet to relieve pressure, then look at the feed valve before you spend money on cartridges.
The automatic shutoff valve ends the fill
The shutoff valve, usually a small square block with four tubes, senses back pressure from the storage tank and stops production once the tank is full. When its diaphragm fails, the system never stops making water and the drain line trickles around the clock. That is the classic symptom of a failed shutoff, and it is often mistaken for a bad membrane. A hissing drain line hours after nobody has used the faucet points here first.
The check valve and the tank ball valve
A check valve sits on the membrane permeate outlet so stored water cannot push backward into the membrane housing. If it leaks, the shutoff never sees full tank pressure and the unit runs continuously, the same symptom as a failed shutoff. The tank ball valve is the quarter-turn handle on top of the pressure tank: it isolates the tank for a filter change, and if a service call left it half closed, you get a cupful and then nothing.
Testing a valve without special tools
Work in order along the flow path. Close the tank ball valve with a full tank, then open the RO faucet: a few ounces and a stop is normal. If the drain still runs with the tank isolated, the shutoff or the check valve is at fault. If flow at the faucet is weak while the tank is full and open, suspect the faucet tubing or a kinked line rather than the membrane. Replace valves as a set when the unit is old, since they cost little next to the labor.
Questions people ask about reverse osmosis valve
Why does my RO drain line run all the time?
Continuous drain flow almost always means the automatic shutoff valve or the permeate check valve has failed, so the system never senses that the storage tank is full.
Can I add a shutoff valve to a system that lacks one?
Yes. Most under-sink units accept a standard four-port shutoff plumbed between the membrane housing, the prefilter line and the tank tee, using the same quick-connect tubing.
Should the tank ball valve stay fully open?
Yes, fully open in normal service. Close it only to isolate the tank while you change filters or sanitize the unit, and reopen it before you restore pressure to the system.
