The water softener valve explained: types, settings and failures

The control valve is the head that sits on top of a softener tank, and it is the part that actually decides when and how the system regenerates. Everything else in a softener is a tank of beads and a box of salt. When a softener stops making soft water, the valve is the first suspect, because almost every wear item in the system lives inside it.

What the valve does during a cycle

In service position it routes incoming hard water down through the resin bed and out to the house. When regeneration is triggered it backwashes the bed to lift and rinse the resin, draws brine from the salt tank through an injector, holds it in contact with the resin, rinses the excess to drain, and refills the brine tank ready for next time. It then returns to service. All of that is done by moving a piston or a stack of discs inside one body, driven by a small motor and a cam.

Metered heads versus timer heads

A timer valve regenerates on a clock, every so many days regardless of how much water was used. It is simple, cheap, and wasteful when the household is away and inadequate when guests arrive. A metered valve counts gallons through a turbine and regenerates when the calculated capacity is nearly used up, which cuts salt and water consumption and keeps soft water available. Metered heads come as immediate or delayed regeneration; delayed waits for the small hours so nobody draws hard water mid cycle.

The bypass, and why it earns its place

Almost every valve accepts a bypass, either an integral lever or a three valve arrangement in the pipework. It lets you isolate the softener and keep the house in water while you service it, which turns a resin change or a valve rebuild from an emergency into an afternoon. It is also how you send unsoftened water to an outside tap for the garden. If your softener has no working bypass, adding one is the cheapest useful upgrade you can make to the installation.

What wears out and what it looks like

Seals and spacers harden and let water pass where it should not, so the softener leaks to drain continuously or never fully regenerates. Injectors and the small screen ahead of them clog with sediment, so no brine is drawn and the resin never recharges. Turbine meters stick, so a metered head stops counting and never triggers. Drive motors and position switches fail, leaving the valve stuck in one stage. Salt that never drops in the tank while the softener runs is the classic sign of a brine draw failure.

Setting it up correctly in the first place

A metered valve has to be programmed with the measured hardness, any iron allowance, the resin volume and the number of people in the house, and a valve programmed from a guess will either waste salt or deliver hard water. How do I know if the valve or the resin has failed?
