Iron removal filter choices: cartridge, media bed or softener resin
An iron removal filter can mean three different pieces of hardware: a cartridge in a housing that strains out already-oxidized rust particles, a backwashing media bed that oxidizes and traps dissolved iron, or an iron-rated softener resin that exchanges modest dissolved iron along with hardness. Which filter works depends entirely on which form your iron is in when it reaches the filter. Matching the filter to the iron
- Establish the iron's form. Fill a clean glass. Water that arrives clear but stains fixtures over time carries dissolved iron, which passes straight through a particle cartridge. Water arriving tinted or with visible rust carries oxidized iron, which a cartridge can catch. A lab test settles it properly.
- Use cartridges only for particles. Sediment and specialty iron cartridges physically strain oxidized particles and work well downstream of an oxidizing step or on wells whose iron arrives already rusty. On dissolved iron they do almost nothing, which is the single most common reason a cheap iron filter disappoints.
- Use media beds for dissolved iron. Air injection and oxidizing media tanks convert dissolved iron to particles inside the tank and backwash them away, handling the case cartridges cannot. They need a drain and power, and they are the right answer when staining is house-wide and the water tests high in ferrous iron.
- Protect what sits downstream. Whatever filter you choose goes ahead of softeners, carbon tanks and RO prefilters, because iron fouls resin and loads carbon quickly. If a softener is already in place, confirm its resin is iron-rated and add the iron filter upstream rather than letting the softener absorb the abuse.
Cartridge iron filters: cheap, and only sometimes right
A cartridge iron filter is attractive because it drops into a standard housing you may already own and costs little, as the table below shows. Where the iron is oxidized particles, a tight sediment cartridge or a dedicated rust cartridge genuinely clears the water, and on light problems that is the whole fix. Expect short cartridge life on heavy iron, since the same particles that stain a tub load a cartridge fast.
Where cartridge filters fail is dissolved iron, and most well iron is dissolved when it leaves the ground. The water passes the cartridge clear, oxidizes later in the toilet tank or on the fixture, and stains exactly as before, leaving the owner convinced iron filters do not work. When to step up to a backwashing system
If iron staining is present at every fixture, if the water tests meaningfully ferrous, or if you are replacing cartridges constantly, the economics tip toward a backwashing iron system. One tank replaces an endless cartridge subscription, and the media handles the oxidation step that cartridges skip. Manganese usually rides along with iron and shares its chemistry, staining brown-black instead of orange, and both carry secondary aesthetic standards rather than health-based ones per Penn State Extension. Specify any filter for both metals together, because a system sized only for the iron number can pass the manganese that then stains the dishwasher.

- Why did my iron filter cartridge not stop the staining?
- Almost always because the iron is dissolved and passes through the cartridge, oxidizing later on your fixtures. Dissolved iron needs an oxidizing media system, not a strainer.
- What is the cheapest iron removal filter that works?

- Does an iron filter remove manganese too?
- The same oxidizing systems generally handle manganese, but it is harder to oxidize than iron, so tell the vendor your manganese result and have the system specified for both.

- After the pressure tank and before everything else that treats water: softener, carbon, UV and RO all last longer when the iron is removed ahead of them.
