Working from the symptom to the system class
- Write down the symptom, then get the evidence. Taste, smell, staining, scale, grit or a specific lab finding each point somewhere different. On a city supply, read the annual water quality report your utility publishes; on a well, order a lab test. Everything below depends on that document rather than on a product review.
- Decide the scope: one tap or every fixture. If only drinking and cooking water is at issue, point-of-use equipment at the kitchen sink is far less equipment for the same result. If the problem shows up in the shower, the laundry, the heater or the stains in the tub, it has to be treated on the main line before the water splits.
- Match the technology to the contaminant class. Carbon for chlorine, taste, odor and many organics. Sediment filtration for particles. Ion exchange for hardness. Oxidation plus filtration for iron, manganese and sulfur. A membrane for dissolved solids. Ultraviolet for microorganisms in already clear water. Nothing in that list substitutes for another.
- Size it and price the upkeep. Main-line equipment is sized to the flow the house draws at once, using the service flow rating vendors publish. Point-of-use equipment is sized to cabinet space. For both, write down every consumable part number and its interval, because that is the figure that decides long-run cost.
The classes, and what each is genuinely for
Pitchers and faucet-mounted filters are carbon in a small package: cheap, instant, and best at chlorine taste for one or two people. Under-sink carbon systems do the same job with far more capacity and no jug to refill. Under-sink reverse osmosis adds a membrane and treats dissolved contaminants that carbon alone does not reliably reduce.
On the main line, cartridge housings handle sediment and light duty, backwashing carbon tanks handle chlorine and organics for the whole house, specialty media tanks handle well problems such as iron and sulfur, and softeners handle hardness. Ultraviolet is added last, and only where a test has shown a microbiological problem worth disinfecting for.
The mismatches that waste the most money
The commonest is buying filtration for a hardness problem. Scale on the kettle, spotting on glassware and soap that will not lather are hardness symptoms, and no carbon or sediment filter changes them. That purchase disappoints reliably, which is why an honest seller asks what the water is doing before recommending anything.
The second is buying whole-house equipment for a drinking-water complaint. If the only issue is that a glass of water tastes of chlorine, a filter at the kitchen tap solves it for a fraction of the install. The reverse mismatch also happens: fitting an under-sink unit when the tub is staining orange, which is an iron problem on the main line.
Comparing systems within a class
Once the class is settled, comparison becomes tractable. For point-of-use, compare certified reduction claims, cartridge format, published intervals and how the unit fits the cabinet. For main-line equipment, compare media type and volume, service flow, valve brand and the warranty split between tank and valve.

- There is no single best. The right class depends on whether the problem affects drinking water only or every fixture, and on what your utility report or well test actually found.
- Is a whole house filter better than an under-sink filter?
- It is bigger, not better. Whole-house equipment treats every fixture and suits sediment, chlorine, iron and scale problems; an under-sink unit treats the water people drink for far less equipment.
- Which filter removes the most contaminants?
- A reverse osmosis membrane removes the widest range of dissolved substances, at the cost of slower production, reject water and more cartridges. It treats one tap, not the whole house.
- Do I need a test before choosing?
- For anything beyond a taste complaint, yes. City customers can read their utility's annual report; well owners need a lab test, since nobody tests a private well on their behalf.
- Can one system handle every problem?
- Rarely. Houses with several issues end up with a train of stages in a deliberate order, because each technology addresses a different contaminant class and none substitutes for another.
