How to deal with nitrate in your water

  1. Get a lab test, not a guess. Nitrate gives no sensory warning at all, so a certified lab test of a properly taken sample is the only way to know your level. Wells near cropland, feedlots or septic fields deserve testing on a regular schedule, since nitrate levels move with the seasons and with what happens on the land around you.
  2. Choose point-of-use or whole-house treatment. Nitrate's risk comes from drinking and cooking water, so an under-sink reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen tap covers most households at far lower cost. Whole-house anion-exchange treatment makes sense when every tap must be covered or the household includes infants being fed prepared formula.
  3. Match the system to the rest of your water chemistry. Anion-exchange systems trade nitrate against other dissolved ions and their performance depends on your water's overall chemistry, particularly sulfate, so size and configure them from the full lab report. Reverse osmosis is less sensitive to chemistry but needs adequate pressure and prefiltration.
  4. Verify after installation and keep verifying. Retest the treated water after installation to prove the system performs on your supply, then retest on a routine schedule and after any change in the well, the land use nearby or the taste of the water. Nitrate treatment is only as good as its maintenance and its last test result.

Why the treatment list is so short

Nitrate dissolves completely in water as an ion, so anything that merely strains particles, sediment cartridges, standard filter pitchers and carbon media included, passes it straight through. Removing it requires forcing the water through a membrane against its ions, exchanging the ion for another on a resin, or leaving the ion behind entirely by evaporating and recondensing the water. Those are reverse osmosis, anion exchange and distillation, and that is the whole practical list for a household.

The boiling point matters enough to repeat: heating nitrate-laden water does not destroy the nitrate, it evaporates the water and leaves the nitrate more concentrated in what remains. Common questions

Does boiling water remove nitrate?
No, and it makes things worse: boiling evaporates water while the nitrate stays behind, so the concentration in the remaining water rises. Only reverse osmosis, anion exchange or distillation remove nitrate from a household supply.
Will my carbon filter or pitcher handle nitrate?
No. Carbon adsorbs certain chemicals and improves taste, but nitrate passes through it unaffected, as it does through sediment filters and standard pitchers. If a pitcher claims nitrate reduction, look for independent certification of that specific claim before relying on it.
How often should I test a well for nitrate?
On a regular schedule, at least annually is the common recommendation for wells in agricultural areas, plus after floods, nearby land-use changes or well work. Levels move with seasons and fertilizer cycles, so one clean result years ago proves little about today.
