  1. Name the threat with a test. Purification without a lab test is guesswork. Bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, lead and PFAS each call for different equipment, and none of them can be seen or tasted reliably.   2. Match the technology to the contaminant. Reverse osmosis strips a broad range of dissolved contaminants at the tap where you drink. UV systems inactivate bacteria and viruses across the whole house but remove nothing, so they pair with filtration. Carbon targets chlorine byproducts, many pesticides and taste. Distillers cover a lot but slowly. Most real solutions stack two of these.
  3. Choose point-of-use or whole-house scope. Drinking-water threats are usually solved at one tap with an under-sink RO unit, which is cheaper to buy and run. Microbial risk or anything you should not shower in pushes toward whole-house treatment. Paying whole-house money for a drinking-water problem is the most common oversizing mistake in this category.
  4. Budget the maintenance before buying. Every purifier is a subscription in disguise: RO membranes and prefilters, UV lamps on an annual change, carbon beds on schedule.
