How to work out whether you need whole house RO at all
- Get a full water analysis first. A lab panel covering hardness, iron, manganese, sulfate, nitrate, TDS, pH and bacteria decides everything downstream. Whole house RO is specified from that sheet, and a membrane sized against the wrong feed water fails early.
- Ask what actually needs treating. If the problem is taste and drinking water quality, a point of use system under the kitchen sink solves it. Whole house RO earns its place only when the supply itself is unusable at every fixture, for example brackish or high sodium well water.
- Specify the pretreatment before the membranes. Membranes are fouled by chlorine, sediment, hardness and oxidized iron. Every whole home system needs sediment filtration, carbon and usually softening ahead of it, and those stages are part of the real project, not an optional extra.
- Plan the tank, pump, drain and space. Permeate lands in a storage tank at zero pressure and has to be pumped back into the house. You need floor space, a drain that accepts continuous reject flow, and power. Many basements and garages cannot take it without work.
- Compare quotes on the whole install, not the box. Ask each vendor for the system, pretreatment, tank, pump, install labor and the annual membrane and cartridge schedule as one figure. The table below gives you the equipment baseline to hold those quotes against.
What whole house reverse osmosis actually does
Reverse osmosis pushes water against a semi permeable membrane under pressure. Water passes, most dissolved salts and minerals do not, and the rejected fraction leaves down the drain. Applied to the whole house, that means every tap, toilet, shower and hose bib runs on demineralized water.
That is a genuine capability, and it is also the reason the system is oversized for most homes. You are paying to demineralize the water that fills the toilet cistern and waters the lawn, when the household drinks a very small share of what it uses.
When it is the right system, and when it is not
The honest cases are narrow: a well with high total dissolved solids, brackish or saline intrusion, high sodium, or a mix of dissolved contaminants that no single media filter handles. In those homes the supply is bad at every fixture and the plant is the fix.
If your complaint is chlorine taste, hardness scale, sulfur smell or iron staining, cheaper equipment is more targeted. A softener handles hardness, catalytic carbon handles chlorine and chloramine taste, an oxidizing filter handles iron and manganese, and an under sink RO gives you drinking water. Running requirements people underestimate
Whole house RO produces reject water continuously while it fills the tank, so your metered use goes up. Sewer districts occasionally have views about that, and homes on septic should check the drain field can take it.
Membranes have a service life and so do the prefilters protecting them. Carbon must be replaced on schedule because chlorine attacks the membrane directly, and a fouled sediment stage starves the pump. Budget maintenance as an annual commitment rather than an occasional job.
Comparing systems fairly
Vendors publish membrane count, daily production in gallons and the pressure the system needs at the inlet. Compare production against your peak household demand rather than average use, because the storage tank is what absorbs a morning of showers.
Also compare what happens when the tank empties. Some systems bypass to raw water, some simply run dry. That single behavior matters more day to day than a small difference in rejection rate on the spec sheet.
Common questions
- Does whole house reverse osmosis remove hardness?
- Yes, the membrane rejects calcium and magnesium along with other dissolved salts. But a softener is normally still fitted ahead of the membranes to stop scale forming on them, so you end up owning both.
- Will it lower my water pressure?
- Not directly, because the permeate is repressurized by a pump after the storage tank. Pressure problems usually come from an undersized pump or a fouled prefilter rather than from the membranes themselves.
- Is an under sink RO system enough instead?
- For drinking and cooking water, almost always yes. A point of use unit treats the few gallons a day that go into your body and costs a fraction of a whole home plant, as the table below shows.
- How long do the membranes last?
- It depends entirely on feed water and on whether the carbon prefilter is changed on time. Membranes protected properly last years; membranes exposed to chlorine or oxidized iron can be ruined in a single season.
