How to replace a water filter housing

  1. Diagnose before you buy. A leak at the sump rim is usually the O-ring: replace and lubricate it with food-grade silicone grease before condemning the housing. Cracks in the plastic, spider crazing around the threads, or a leak from the head itself are structural, and no gasket fixes those. Structural failure means replacement, and promptly, because housings fail under pressure.
  2. Match the size and the ports. Housings are standardized by cartridge length and diameter, slim or big-body, and by the pipe thread size of the inlet and outlet ports. Match all three to your existing setup, and note whether yours has a pressure-relief button on the cap, a feature worth having on the replacement.
  3. Swap it with the system depressurized. Shut the supply, open a downstream tap to bleed pressure, and catch the sump's water in a pan. Unthread the old head from the plumbing, fit the new housing with fresh thread sealant on the port threads, seat the cartridge and lubricated O-ring, and hand-tighten the sump plus a small turn with the wrench.
  4. Pressurize slowly and verify. Open the supply gradually, press the relief button to purge air, and inspect every joint dry-handed for seepage over the next day. A housing that holds on day one can still weep at a poorly doped thread, so check again after the first full pressure cycles before calling the job done.

Why housings fail, and how to make the next one last

Clear plastic sumps let you see the cartridge but embrittle over years, especially where sunlight or chlorinated water accelerates aging, and they crack without much warning. Overtightening is the other killer: cranking the sump with the wrench crushes the O-ring and stresses the threads, when a lubricated ring only needs gentle compression to seal. Pressure spikes from water hammer finish the job on a weakened shell.

The replacement decision is a chance to upgrade: opaque sumps resist aging better than clear ones, metal-reinforced or heavier-bodied housings shrug off pressure cycling, and a bracket that takes the wrench torque instead of the plumbing saves the joints. If your system sees pressure spikes, a hammer arrestor or pressure regulator upstream protects the new housing from the thing that killed the old one.

Replace the housing or the whole system?

Common questions

How do I know if the housing or just the O-ring is leaking?
Leaks at the sump-to-head rim are usually the O-ring: replace it, grease it lightly with food-grade silicone, and retest. Leaks through cracks, crazed plastic, or the head casting itself mean the housing is done.
Are water filter housings a standard size?
Largely yes: standard cartridge lengths in slim and big-body diameters, with common pipe thread ports. Match cartridge size and port thread and most brands interchange. Proprietary quick-change heads are the exception.
How tight should a filter housing sump be?
