The under-sink install, cabinet-first

1. Measure the cabinet before buying anything. Measure the clear height and depth around the trap, disposal and any pull-out bins. Tanked systems need floor space for the storage tank plus wall space for the manifold; tankless systems trade that footprint for a powered unit that needs an outlet.
2. Sort out the faucet hole. Many sinks have a spare hole under a soap dispenser or cover plate that the RO faucet drops straight into. If not, stainless sinks drill easily with the right bit, while granite and composite counters deserve a diamond bit and patience, or a pro.
3. Make the feed and drain connections. Tee the feed off the cold angle stop with the supplied adapter. Connect the reject line to the drain above the trap, on the sink side of any disposal, using the drain saddle or an air-gap faucet where your local code requires the air gap.
4. Route tubing, pressurize and flush. Run the color-coded tubing in gentle curves with no kinks, leaving slack to slide the manifold out for filter changes. Open the feed, check every joint dry-fingered for weeping, and send the first tankfuls to drain on the schedule the manufacturer prints.

Cabinet layout: where everything actually goes

Hang the manifold on the cabinet side wall with enough clearance below the housings to swing the filter wrench; installations that ignore this get dismantled at the first filter change. Keep the tank on the opposite side of the trap so the doors still close and the shutoff valves stay reachable.

If the cabinet is already full, consider a compact tankless system or locating the tank in an adjacent cabinet with the tubing passing through a drilled hole. Long tubing runs are fine for the purified line; keep the drain run short and falling.

The drain, the disposal and the code question

The reject line must enter the drain above the trap so sewer gas cannot reach the system. With a disposal fitted, the saddle goes on the tailpiece or the dishwasher branch, never on the disposal body. Some jurisdictions require an air-gap faucet instead of a simple saddle; a call to the building department settles it in minutes.

Air-gap faucets gurgle audibly as the tank fills, which surprises people. It is the sound of the air gap doing its job, but if the noise bothers you and your code allows a standard faucet with a saddle connection, that combination runs silent.

When this job is worth handing to a pro

Drilling a stone countertop, tying the RO output across the kitchen to a refrigerator, adding a booster pump for weak pressure, or dealing with corroded angle stops that will not close are all points where a plumber earns the fee. Everything else in the kit is push-fit and homeowner-grade.

Will an RO system fit under any kitchen sink?

Most standard base cabinets take a tanked system, but disposals, instant-hot tanks and pull-out bins shrink the space fast. Measure first; compact and tankless models exist precisely for tight cabinets.

Do I have to drill my countertop for the faucet?

Only if the sink has no spare hole. Many sinks hide one under a soap dispenser or cover plate. If drilling is needed, stainless is a DIY job with the right bit; stone is better left to someone with a diamond bit and experience.
