Restricting the drain line to reduce waste is therefore the classic false economy: production falls, membrane life collapses, and the household replaces an expensive component early to save a small volume of water.

The common approach returns the concentrate to the household hot water line rather than to the drain. Nothing is discarded, so the claim is literally true, and the consequence is that the concentrate, which carries a higher dissolved mineral content than the feed, is recirculated into the water used for showers, laundry and washing up. A permeate pump uses the energy of the reject stream to help push the product into the storage tank, which removes the back pressure that builds as the tank fills. That is a real reduction in ratio rather than a redirection, and it also improves the treated water quality.

Ask where the concentrate goes and what its dissolved content is relative to the feed. If it returns to the hot line, consider your hardness and your water heater before buying.
