Fitting a reverse osmosis drain line adapter under a sink

Every reverse osmosis system produces a reject stream that has to go to waste, and the drain line adapter is what connects the small waste tube into the sink drain. It is the least glamorous part of the installation and by some distance the most common source of leaks, smells and code problems, so it repays doing properly.

The saddle clamp and its problems

Most kits supply a drain saddle: two halves that clamp around the tailpiece with a rubber gasket, aligned with a hole you drill through the pipe wall. It is quick, and it fails in predictable ways. The drilled hole is a burr trap that collects debris and blocks. The gasket is compressed by two screws that people over tighten, distorting a thin walled tailpiece. And a saddle mounted below the trap or on a horizontal run collects standing water and grows the smell that owners later blame on the RO unit.

Where it must be placed

Above the trap, always, and on the vertical tailpiece rather than the horizontal arm, so waste falls away rather than pooling in the fitting. Keep it well clear of a garbage disposal outlet, since food waste blocks a small drilled hole quickly, and on the sink side away from the disposal where one is fitted. The waste tube should run downhill from the unit with no dips, because a sagging tube holds water and makes the system gurgle and drip long after it should have stopped.

The alternatives worth using

A branch tailpiece with a moulded connection replaces the saddle entirely: it drops into the existing tailpiece run and gives a proper fitting rather than a drilled hole. Some jurisdictions require an air gap arrangement, either a dedicated air gap faucet or an air gap fitting in the line, to prevent drain water being siphoned back into the unit, and where that applies a plain saddle is not compliant. Check what your local code requires before installing, since this is one of the few parts of a domestic RO fit that is genuinely regulated.

Fitting it so it stays sound

Deburr the drilled hole thoroughly on both faces, because the swarf left behind is what starts the first blockage. Seat the gasket squarely and tighten the two screws evenly and only until the gasket is compressed, alternating between them. Align the saddle outlet with the drilled hole by eye before final tightening. Then run the unit and check the joint by hand, and again the following day, since a slow weep here soaks a cabinet base before it ever drips visibly.
