When an under sink reverse osmosis system misbehaves, the drain connection is the first place to look and the last place most owners think of. A blocked, badly placed or leaking drain adapter produces symptoms that look like membrane trouble, tank trouble or a plumbing smell, and none of those diagnoses leads anywhere useful.
Smell from the cabinet
A drain saddle fitted below the trap, or on a horizontal drain arm rather than the vertical tailpiece, holds standing water in the fitting and in the tube above it, and that pocket goes stagnant and smells. So does a waste tube that sags between the unit and the drain, since the dip holds water permanently. The fix is repositioning rather than cleaning: move the saddle above the trap onto the vertical tailpiece, and re route the tube so it falls continuously with no low point along its length.
The system runs constantly to drain
Water audibly running to drain long after the tank should be full points at the automatic shutoff valve rather than at the adapter, since that valve is what stops production at tank pressure. But check the drain side too: a partly blocked adapter raises back pressure and can prevent the shutoff sensing correctly. The other candidate is a failed permeate check valve letting tank water push backwards. Isolate the tank and watch what the drain does to separate the two.
Slow production or none
A blocked drilled hole in the saddle is a classic cause, and it is usually the burr left from drilling that started the accumulation. Disconnect the waste tube and check that water flows freely through the fitting, then remove the saddle and deburr and clear the hole properly rather than poking it clear from outside. A missing or wrong flow restrictor sits on this same line: too restrictive and production collapses, too open and the membrane fouls while most of the water goes to waste.
A wet cabinet base
Drain saddles weep from an over tightened gasket that has distorted a thin walled tailpiece, from a gasket that was pinched half out of its groove on assembly, or from the two screws being tightened unevenly. All three hold at first and start weeping once pressure settles, which is why the water appears days after the work. Loosen, reseat the gasket squarely, and tighten the screws evenly to compression and no further. A branch tailpiece with a moulded connection avoids the whole failure mode.
