The most useful way to read an RO system diagram is not as a picture but as a route. Water enters at one point, passes through a fixed sequence of components, and leaves by two paths, one to your faucet and one to the drain. Learn the order and any fault localizes itself to a stretch of tubing between two parts.

From the cold supply to the membrane

Water leaves the cold shutoff under the sink through a feed adapter, then travels to the first stage. Stage one is a sediment cartridge that protects everything after it. Stage two, and often stage three, are carbon blocks that remove chlorine, because chlorine attacks the membrane material used in most household units. That is the whole reason carbon sits before the membrane rather than after it, and skipping it shortens membrane life badly.

The membrane housing and its two outlets

The membrane sits in a horizontal housing with one inlet and two outlets. Permeate, the treated water, leaves through a small port and heads for the storage tank via a check valve. Concentrate leaves through the other port and goes to the drain through a flow restrictor, which holds back pressure so the membrane can work. If a diagram shows a fixed orifice or a coiled capillary on the drain line, that is the restrictor.

Tank, post-filter and faucet

Stored water sits in a pressurized tank with an internal bladder and an air charge below it. When you open the RO faucet, tank pressure pushes water out through a final carbon post-filter, which polishes taste after the water has been sitting, and then to the faucet. Some diagrams add a remineralization cartridge or a UV lamp here. The automatic shutoff valve sits between the prefilter line and the tank line and stops production when the tank fills.

Reading the diagram to find a fault

Slow production points upstream: feed valve, prefilters, low line pressure. A drain line that never stops points at the shutoff or the check valve. Water at the faucet that tastes stale points at the post-filter or a tank that never empties. No water at all with a full tank points at the tank ball valve or a kinked tube. Why is carbon placed before the RO membrane?

Chlorine damages the thin film membrane used in most household units, so carbon blocks remove it upstream. A separate carbon post-filter after the tank handles taste.

What is the flow restrictor on the drain line for?

It maintains pressure across the membrane. Without it, feed water would take the easy path to the drain and very little would be pushed through the membrane.

Does the storage tank need an air charge?

Yes. An empty tank carries a preset air charge below the bladder, and a tank that has lost it will fill but deliver only a trickle when the faucet is opened.
