Point of use reverse osmosis means a membrane system treating water at the place it is drawn, almost always the kitchen tap. That scope is not a compromise forced by cost: it is the arrangement that makes the technology practical at home, and understanding why explains both the appeal and the limits.
Why one tap is the right scope
A membrane produces slowly and sends a concentrate stream to drain while it works, so treating everything a household uses would need a great deal of membrane area, a large storage tank, a repressurisation pump and a much larger reject volume. Applied to one tap, the same technology fits in a cabinet, runs on line pressure and treats the water that actually matters, since ingestion is the exposure route for the contaminants people are concerned about.
What is in the system
A sediment prefilter and a carbon prefilter protecting the membrane, the membrane itself in its own pressure vessel, a storage tank with an air charge behind a bladder, a polishing carbon filter after the tank, and usually a dedicated faucet. Many systems add a remineralization cartridge last, which addresses the flat taste of fresh permeate. An automatic shut off valve stops production when the tank is full, and a flow restrictor in the drain line sets the reject rate.
What it treats and what it does not
It rejects most dissolved material: salts, dissolved metals including lead, nitrate, fluoride, arsenic in its charged form, and hardness in the water it treats. It does not treat the rest of the house, so showers, laundry, the washing machine and the water heater see the untreated supply, and any hardness complaint there remains. It does not remove chlorine, which the carbon prefilter does, and it is not usually certified as a microbiological treatment for a contaminated supply.
What it asks of the kitchen
Cabinet space for the stack and the tank, with clearance below the stack to pull cartridges down. A tee into the cold feed. A drain connection above the trap, and an air gap where local code requires one. A hole for the dedicated faucet, easy in stainless and a specialist job in stone.
