Why point of use often beats whole house

Treating the entire building for them means running vastly more water through expensive media than you will ever drink, and the certified media for those contaminants is not cheap. Point of use concentrates the capacity where it counts. It is also the only sensible place for a lead filter, because lead is picked up in the household plumbing downstream of where a whole-house filter would sit.

What point of use will never fix

Scale on the shower glass, spotting on dishes, orange staining in the tub, sediment fouling the water heater and a chlorine smell in the bathroom are all whole-house symptoms and no point of use device touches them. If your complaint is about how the water behaves rather than how it tastes, you are looking at the wrong category. Most well households end up with both: a treatment train on the main line for hardness, iron and sediment, plus a point of use unit at the kitchen tap for drinking. The two are complements, not alternatives.

Buying against evidence

Certification is what separates a device that reduces a named contaminant from one that improves taste, so read the performance data sheet for the specific contaminant you care about rather than the claims on the box. Start with what is actually in your supply: every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for it, which costs nothing and tells you what the utility measured.
