How to evaluate a complete under-sink kit
- Inspect the mounting and the manifold. A good kit mounts to the cabinet wall on a bracket so the plumbing is not hanging on the tubing. Look at whether the housings share a manifold, how the cartridges seat, and whether the whole assembly can be serviced without unbolting it from the wall.
- Check the shutoff and leak protection. The kit should include an inlet shutoff so you can isolate it without crawling for the angle stop. Push-fit connections should be rated for the tubing supplied, and a leak detector or a drip tray under the assembly is cheap protection for a cabinet floor you cannot see.
- Count the housings and price the cartridges. More housings mean more cartridges on the calendar. Write down the part number and published interval for every stage, then multiply that out for a few years of ownership before comparing systems. This is where two similarly priced kits separate sharply.
- Confirm the faucet and the sink holes. A dedicated faucet needs a spare hole or a drilled counter, and the finish should match the rest of the sink. RO kits require the dedicated faucet; straight carbon kits can often tee into the existing cold line instead, which changes how fast the cartridges are consumed.
- Measure the cabinet, then measure the swing. Height under the trap is only half the question. You also need the clearance to drop a housing sump straight down or swing a cartridge out past the waste disposal, plus room for a storage tank if the system uses one. Measure before ordering, not after.
What a good kit includes that a cheap one leaves out
The parts that separate kits are rarely the filters. They are the mounting bracket, the quality of the push-fit fittings, the inlet shutoff, the tubing wall thickness, whether a wrench is supplied for the housings, and whether the faucet is a real fixture or a thin-walled part that loosens after a year of use.
The other differentiator is documentation. A serious manufacturer publishes cartridge part numbers, change intervals, service flow and what the system is certified to reduce. A kit that publishes only a contaminant list and a stage count is asking you to buy on adjectives, and it is usually the same kit under several names.
Serviceability is what you actually buy
You will interact with this system exactly twice a project: when it goes in, and every time a cartridge is due. Quick-change modules make the second interaction trivial and fix your supplier. Standard housings need a wrench, a towel and a few minutes, and let you shop for cartridges. Both are fine; buying without deciding is not.
Look also at whether the system can be isolated and drained without emptying the cabinet. Systems with a bypass or a proper inlet valve can be serviced in place. Systems where the only shutoff is the angle stop behind the disposal turn a ten-minute cartridge change into an awkward job people put off, and a postponed change is a filter working worse than none.
Matching the kit to what the water needs
A multi-stage carbon kit suits chlorinated municipal water where the complaint is taste, odor and the occasional particle. Add a sediment stage if the aerators clog. Choose a kit built around a membrane when a test has flagged dissolved contaminants, and accept the tank, the drain connection and the extra cartridges that come with it.

- Quick-change modules or standard housings?
