How to choose the right type in four steps

  1. Name the problem in one sentence. Chlorine taste, a musty smell, grit in the aerator, a lab result flagging something specific, or simply wanting cleaner drinking water: each of those points at a different filter. Write the sentence down before you shop, because it rules out most of the market immediately.
  2. Get evidence if the problem is not a taste. Taste and smell you can judge yourself. Anything else needs a test: your utility's annual report if you are on city water, or a lab test if you are on a well.   3. Pick carbon or reverse osmosis. Carbon handles chlorine, taste, odor and many organic compounds at full tap flow with no wastewater. Reverse osmosis adds a membrane that removes dissolved solids carbon cannot, at the price of a slower fill, reject water and more cartridges. Match this to the sentence from step one.
  4. Check that it physically fits. Measure the cabinet before ordering: height under the trap, clearance to swing a cartridge out, and whether a storage tank will fit alongside the waste disposal. Then decide whether you want a dedicated faucet, which needs a spare hole in the sink or a hole drilled in the counter.

Carbon: the right answer more often than the internet suggests

For a household whose complaint is that the water tastes and smells of chlorine, an under-sink carbon system is the direct fix. It runs at close to full tap pressure, wastes nothing, takes up modest cabinet space and has one or two cartridges to change. Carbon block also catches particulates and some metals depending on the grade, which is why the block rating matters more than the number of housings.

What carbon does not do is remove dissolved minerals. It will not soften water, will not reduce nitrate meaningfully, and its performance against dissolved metals depends entirely on the media grade the manufacturer used. If a lab report has flagged one of those, carbon alone is the wrong tool no matter how many stages the box advertises.

Reverse osmosis: more capability, more upkeep

An RO system adds a semipermeable membrane that removes a much wider range of dissolved contaminants, which is why it is the standard recommendation when a test has flagged something specific in drinking water. The trade is real: it produces slowly into a tank or via a higher-rated tankless unit, sends reject water to the drain, and has more cartridges on the calendar.

Many households add a remineralization stage because fully demineralized water tastes flat to some palates. That is a preference, not a safety question. If the only reason RO is on your shortlist is chlorine taste, the carbon system above delivers the same result at the tap for less equipment and less maintenance.

The details that decide whether you like it in year two

Cartridge format decides how the system feels to live with. Twist-in modules change in seconds and tie you to one manufacturer's parts. Standard housings need a wrench and a towel and accept cartridges from many suppliers. Neither is wrong; knowing which one you bought before the first change is what avoids irritation.

The other detail is the faucet. A dedicated filtered-water faucet keeps unfiltered water available for washing up and is required for RO, but it needs a spare sink hole or a drilled counter. Inline systems that filter the existing cold tap avoid the hole and mean every drop through that faucet uses cartridge life, which shortens the interval.

Common questions

Is reverse osmosis always better than carbon under the sink?
No. RO removes far more dissolved contaminants, but if the problem is chlorine taste and odor, carbon fixes it at full flow with no reject water and fewer cartridges to buy.
How do I know which one my water needs?
By evidence. Read your utility's annual water quality report on a city supply, or order a lab test on a well, then match the filter type to what the report actually flags.
Will an under-sink filter soften my water?
No. Softening is ion exchange on the main line. An under-sink filter treats one tap, so scale on the shower head and the kettle continues exactly as before.
Do I have to drill the countertop?
Only if you want a dedicated faucet and the sink has no spare hole. Inline systems feed the existing cold tap instead, at the cost of using cartridge life on every drop drawn there.
How much cabinet space do these need?
Measure height under the trap and the clearance to swing a cartridge out. Carbon systems are compact; an RO with a storage tank needs noticeably more room, especially alongside a waste disposal.
