  2. Backwashing carbon tank for chlorine, taste and organics. This is the workhorse on treated municipal water: a tank of carbon media with a valve that backwashes itself on a schedule. It handles chlorine, taste and odor across every fixture, needs no cartridge changes for years, and asks only for a drain connection and a power outlet.
  3. Cartridge systems for sediment and small budgets. A housing or a bank of housings with replaceable cartridges costs less to buy and is easy to fit. It suits sediment-heavy supplies and households that want a modest improvement now, provided everyone accepts that cartridges are a recurring purchase and a neglected one restricts flow.
  4. Specialty media for well water problems. Iron, manganese, sulfur smell and low pH each need their own media or an oxidation stage, ordered ahead of anything finer. A general carbon system fitted to well water with iron will foul, which is the most common expensive mistake in this category.
  5. Ultraviolet where the test found bacteria. A UV lamp inactivates microorganisms and removes nothing else, so it goes last, after the water is already clear. It needs power, an annual lamp change and a sleeve that stays clean, and it is only appropriate when a test has actually shown a microbiological problem.

City water and well water lead to different machines

On a municipal supply the water arrived treated and disinfected, so whole-house work is usually about what the disinfection left behind: chlorine or chloramine taste, disinfection byproducts, and whatever the local report flags. On a well, nobody treated anything before it reached you. Square footage and bathroom count are proxies at best.

The consequence of getting it wrong is felt daily. Undersized equipment drops pressure when two people need water at once, which is the complaint that gets systems bypassed and then removed. Oversized equipment costs more than it needed to and can channel, because the bed never sees enough flow to backwash and redistribute properly.
