RO replacement filters: getting the right set at the right price

A reverse osmosis system is a set of stages, and each stage has its own replacement schedule: sediment and carbon prefilters that protect the membrane, the membrane itself, and a polishing post-filter before the faucet. Buying the right replacements means knowing which stages your unit has and whether it takes standard-size cartridges or the brand's own quick-change ones. The table below compares current replacement pricing across sellers so you can see what a full set should cost before you reorder.

How to reorder RO filters correctly

  1. Map your system's stages. Open the cabinet and count the housings. A typical unit runs a sediment prefilter, one or two carbon prefilters, the membrane in its horizontal housing, and an inline post-filter. Note the model number on the unit and on each cartridge, since that decides what fits.
  2. Separate the schedules. Prefilters and post-filters change on a short cycle because carbon exhausts and sediment loads up. The membrane lasts several times longer when its prefilters are kept fresh. Do not buy membrane-inclusive sets every cycle; most reorders only need the prefilter and post-filter stages.
  3. Match standard or proprietary. Standard housings take widely available ten-inch cartridges from many brands, so you can shop the table above on price. Quick-change systems with twist-in color-coded cartridges only accept their own brand, and buying those anywhere but the maker or an authorized dealer risks counterfeits.
  4. Change them cleanly. Shut the feed valve, drain the faucet, and swap cartridges with washed hands, lubricating O-rings with food-grade silicone grease. Sanitize the housings on the schedule your manual gives, flush the first tank of water after a change, and write the date on each new cartridge in marker.

Why the prefilters are the purchase that matters

The membrane is the expensive heart of the system, and everything upstream exists to protect it. Chlorine in city water chemically destroys thin-film membranes, which is what the carbon prefilter prevents, and sediment physically clogs membrane surfaces, which is the sediment stage's job. Skipping a cheap prefilter change is how people end up buying membranes early.

That is also why the sensible budgeting unit is the annual set, not the individual cartridge. When you compare sellers in the table below, price the combination your system actually consumes in a year. A seller with cheap membranes but expensive prefilter packs can cost more across a full cycle, and our ro membrane replacement guide covers how to tell when the membrane itself is genuinely due.

Signs your replacements are overdue

Slow faucet flow and a tank that never seems full usually mean loaded prefilters or an exhausted membrane. A returning chlorine or musty taste points at the post-filter, which sits last and catches any tank taste. If you use a TDS meter, a creeping reading at the RO faucet relative to the tap is the classic sign the membrane is passing dissolved solids and needs changing.

If the unit came with the house and you have no history, replace every stage once, date them, and start the schedule from zero. Cartridges of unknown age are not worth diagnosing around, and a full set from the table below costs far less than the appliance repairs or retests that bad drinking water assumptions lead to.

Common questions

How often do RO filters really need changing?
Follow your manual's schedule as the baseline: prefilters and post-filters on the short cycle, the membrane on the long one. Heavy use, sediment-laden well water or heavy chlorination shortens the real interval.
Can I use another brand's cartridges in my RO system?
Yes in standard ten-inch housings, where size and micron rating are what matter. No in proprietary quick-change systems, which are keyed to the maker's own cartridges.
What should a set of RO replacement filters cost?
The table above shows current pricing across sellers, with a median around $1,531 for a standard set. Membrane-inclusive sets cost more but are only needed on the long cycle.
Do I have to sanitize the system when changing filters?
Sanitizing the housings and tank on the manual's schedule keeps biofilm from building up in the wet parts of the system. Most owners do it during the annual prefilter change.
