On a private well, the filtration tank is usually the first serious piece of equipment, and it is the one most often sized wrong. The reason is that a tank has two flow requirements pulling in opposite directions: enough contact for the media to work in service, and enough flow to lift the bed in backwash. A well pump has to satisfy both, and many do not.
The two flow figures
Service flow is what the household draws through the bed. Too small a tank means water passes too quickly for the media to do its job, so treatment falls off exactly when demand is highest. Backwash flow is what the tank needs to fluidize the bed and carry trapped material to drain, and it rises with the square of the tank diameter, so a larger tank demands considerably more. The tank has to be big enough for the first requirement and small enough for the well to satisfy the second.
What the well can actually deliver
Check the pump's output and, on a low yield well, the recovery rate, because backwash draws a steady flow for several minutes rather than a brief peak. A pump that comfortably serves a shower may not sustain a backwash, and a well that recovers slowly may run the pump dry doing it. Where the numbers do not work, the answers are a smaller diameter tank, a backwash scheduled when nothing else draws, or a storage tank and booster arrangement that decouples the house from the well's instantaneous output.
Media decides the job, the tank is generic
The same vessel and control valve serve entirely different treatments depending on the fill: multimedia or sand for sediment, catalytic media or greensand for iron and manganese, calcite for acidic water, carbon for chlorine and taste. That is why a well system often ends up as two or three identical looking tanks in a row, in a fixed order, with sediment first and anything pH sensitive placed where the chemistry suits. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated, so the test result rather than a catalogue decides the fill.
Installation details that matter later
Leave headroom above the tank to lift the valve and load media, and a route to get the tank in and out of the room. Fit isolation valves and a bypass. Route the drain line with an air gap and within the run and lift the valve can manage, since a restricted drain quietly ruins backwash.
