Water filtration media and what each type removes

Water filtration media is the loose material inside a tank or cartridge that does the actual work. Choosing a system is really choosing media, because the tank, valve and plumbing are close to interchangeable while the media decides what leaves your water. Each type addresses a narrow set of problems and is nearly useless outside it, which is why real systems stage several in sequence.

Carbon: taste, odor and chlorine

Activated carbon works by adsorption, holding organic molecules on an enormous internal surface area. It is the media behind almost every improvement in taste and smell, and it takes chlorine out efficiently. Catalytic carbon is a modified form that also handles chloramine, which ordinary carbon struggles with, and helps with hydrogen sulfide. Carbon is consumed rather than cleaned: once the surface is loaded it stops working, and there is no visible sign, which is why replacement runs on volume treated or elapsed time rather than on appearance. Coconut shell and bituminous coal bases behave slightly differently, and makers publish which they use.

Ion exchange resin: hardness and specific ions

Cation exchange resin is the amber bead bed in a softener. It swaps sodium for calcium and magnesium, which the USGS defines as the dissolved minerals that make water hard, then regenerates with brine and does it again. Specialty resins do other jobs: anion resin for nitrate or tannins, and dedicated resins for specific problem ions. Resin lasts years on clean chlorinated municipal water but is damaged by free chlorine over time and fouled by iron. It is the only common media that removes hardness rather than conditioning it, which is why a hardness test before and after tells you honestly whether it is doing anything.

Oxidizing and neutralizing beds for well water

Wells bring problems city water does not. Oxidizing media, whether manganese-coated greensand or a modern catalytic filter media, converts dissolved iron and manganese into particles that the bed then catches and backwashes away, often with an air pocket or a chemical feed to supply the oxygen. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, which is where the orange and black staining thresholds come from. Calcite and magnesia blends raise the pH of corrosive water by slowly dissolving into it, which is a neutralizer rather than a filter and needs periodic topping up as it is consumed.

Sediment beds and the order of the train

Graded layers of anthracite, filter sand and garnet make a multimedia bed that catches grit through its depth and rinses clean on backwash, doing the job of a sediment cartridge without cartridges to buy. The ordering rule for a whole system is simple: protect each media from what would destroy it. Sediment first so grit does not scour the beds behind it. Oxidizing filters before a softener, because oxidized iron fouls resin. Carbon before resin on chlorinated supplies to spare the beads. UV last of all, since it needs clear water. Questions people ask about water filtration media

Which media removes hardness?

Only cation exchange resin actually removes calcium and magnesium. Carbon, sediment and oxidizing beds leave hardness untouched, and conditioning media changes behavior without removal.

Does filtration media need replacing on a schedule?

Carbon and oxidizing media are consumed and are replaced on the maker's capacity or interval. Resin and sediment beds last far longer but eventually foul or degrade.

Can I mix different media in one tank?

Layered sediment beds are designed for it, but mixing carbon with resin in a single bed is a compromise. Separate tanks in the right order almost always perform better.

How do I know which media my house needs?

From a water test, not a catalog. The parameters that come back high map directly onto specific media, and anything not on the test needs no media at all.
