Filter media is the working material packed inside a treatment tank: the granules, beads or block that actually remove things from the water, while the tank and valve merely move water through it. Knowing which media does which job explains most of the residential treatment catalog, and knowing how media wears out tells you when a system needs a rebed instead of a replacement.
The main media families and their jobs
Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine, tastes and odors, with catalytic carbon as the upgraded grade for chloramine. Oxidizing media beds capture iron, manganese and sulfur after air or an oxidant converts them to filterable particles. Ion-exchange resin, the media inside every softener, swaps sodium for hardness minerals. Calcite and similar neutralizing media dissolve slowly on purpose to raise acidic pH. Sediment media and screens simply strain particles by size. Every whole-house tank you can buy is one of these families, or a layered combination of them, behind a different label.
How media wears out, family by family
Each family fails in its own way. Carbon exhausts silently: it keeps passing water at full flow while adsorbing nothing, so breakthrough of chlorine taste is the tell. Oxidizing beds blind over with the very particles they capture and depend on regular backwashing to stay open. Resin is chemically robust but physically vulnerable: Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron fouls resin, which is why iron-bearing water shortens softener life so sharply. Neutralizing media is sacrificial by design and simply needs topping up as it dissolves into the water it treats.
Rebedding: replacing the media, keeping the tank
Tanks and control valves outlive their contents by years, so the economical repair for an exhausted system is usually a rebed: the old media is vacuumed or dumped out, the distributor and gravel underbed are inspected, and fresh media is funneled in. It is a messy but genuinely doable owner job on many systems, and a routine service call otherwise. The trigger is performance, not the calendar alone: returning chlorine taste, iron staining after years of clean water, or hardness breakthrough a regeneration does not cure. Questions people ask about filter media
How do I know which filter media my system uses?
The model documentation states it, and the system's job usually gives it away: softeners hold ion-exchange resin, chlorine and odor tanks hold carbon, iron systems hold an oxidizing bed, and acid neutralizers hold calcite or a similar dissolving media.
Can I mix different media in one tank?
Only in designs engineered for it. Layered multi-media tanks exist and work, but the layers are chosen for compatible backwash behavior. Pouring a second media into a single-purpose tank usually ruins the flow pattern and both media's performance.
Why did my softener resin fail early?
Iron is the usual culprit: oxidized iron fouls resin, as Penn State Extension documents, and chlorine exposure ages it too. Pretreatment ahead of the softener, an iron filter on wells or carbon on chlorinated city water, is what protects the bed.
