UV water filtration is the standard way a household disinfects its own well without adding chemicals. The lamp itself is the easy part. The design decisions that determine whether it works are where it sits in the treatment train, what flow it is sized for, what pretreatment protects it, and what happens on the day the power goes out.
Why well owners end up here
The EPA states that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 43 million people, rely on one. There is no utility adding a disinfectant residual, so a well that tests positive for coliform has two realistic options: continuous chemical injection with contact time, or ultraviolet. UV appeals because it adds nothing to the water and needs no chemical handling, and it is often the choice for a clear, cold well where bacteria is the only fault.
Position it last, and close to the house
UV leaves no residual, so anything that gets into the plumbing after the chamber is untreated. Fit the unit at the end of the treatment train, after sediment filtration, iron removal and softening, and as close to the point of entry to the house as practical. Every joint, tank or length of pipe after the lamp is unprotected, which is also why a pressure tank belongs upstream of the UV rather than downstream. Mount the chamber so the lamp can be withdrawn along its full length, which usually means allowing clearance equal to the chamber above or beside it.
Size on peak simultaneous flow
Dose is inversely related to flow, so a unit chosen for average household use is undersized when a shower, a washing machine and an outside tap run together. Add up the fixtures that can realistically run at once, or use the well pump's delivery rate as the ceiling, and choose a unit rated at or above that. Then check the rating against your water's ultraviolet transmittance: water with tannins, color or dissolved organics absorbs the light and needs a larger unit than clear water at the same flow. Underrating here produces a system that is compliant on paper and failing in practice.
Pretreatment protects the sleeve
Hardness scales the quartz sleeve, iron and manganese stain it, and sediment shields organisms in the flow. All three reduce the delivered dose invisibly. So a sediment filter is mandatory, iron treatment is required where iron is present, and softening ahead of the UV is common on hard water purely to keep the sleeve clean. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, which is a useful yardstick for whether metals need handling before the lamp sees the water.
Alarms, power and commissioning
Buy a unit with a UV intensity sensor and an audible alarm rather than a simple lamp-on light, because the failure you care about is reduced output, not a dead lamp. Some systems add a solenoid valve that shuts off flow on a fault, which is the safest arrangement in a house with children. Power interruption means untreated water entered the plumbing, so flush the system afterwards. Shock chlorinate the well and the plumbing when you commission the unit, then retest, because UV disinfects water passing through it and does nothing about biofilm already sitting in the pipes. Questions people ask about uv water filtration
Where should the UV unit go relative to the pressure tank?
After it. Treating water on its way into the house means the tank, which is a large volume of standing water, is upstream and does not sit between the lamp and your taps.
Does UV work on a well with iron staining?
Not reliably until the iron is removed. Iron films coat the quartz sleeve and particles shield bacteria from the light, so iron treatment comes first.
Do I need to test after installing UV?
Yes. Shock the well and plumbing, install the unit, then retest for coliform to prove the whole system, not just the lamp, is delivering safe water.
Is UV enough on its own for a contaminated well?
It handles microorganisms only. Nitrate, arsenic, lead and other chemical contaminants pass straight through and need their own treatment.
