A UV filtration system for well water inactivates bacteria and viruses as water passes a lamp, so they can no longer reproduce or cause illness. It removes nothing: every mineral, metal and chemical in the water leaves the chamber unchanged. That makes it the last stage in a well train, and it only works if the water reaching it is genuinely clear.
Inactivation, not removal
Ultraviolet light at germicidal wavelength damages the genetic material of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce. There is no chemical added, no taste or odor change, and no residual protection downstream, which means any contamination introduced after the lamp is untreated. Nothing is physically taken out of the water, so a UV unit does nothing for iron, hardness, nitrate, arsenic, lead or taste. It is a disinfection stage bolted onto the end of whatever treatment train the chemistry of your well requires, not an alternative to that train.
Clear water is a prerequisite
Ultraviolet only works on organisms it can reach. Turbidity, sediment and even fine particles shadow microorganisms from the lamp, and hardness, iron and manganese deposit a film on the quartz sleeve that surrounds it, cutting transmission steadily until the unit is doing far less than the label promises. So a sediment prefilter is mandatory, iron and manganese removal and softening go ahead of the lamp where the water needs them, and the specification is checked against the ultraviolet transmittance of your actual water rather than a nominal figure. Tannin-stained water absorbs the light and needs particular attention.
Dose, flow rate and sizing
The disinfection dose is a function of lamp intensity and how long the water spends in the chamber, which means dose falls as flow rises. A unit is therefore sized against the peak flow the house can actually draw, with every fixture that might run at once counted, not against average daily use. Undersizing is invisible: the lamp still glows and the water still looks fine while passing through too fast to be treated. Better units carry a sensor that measures actual ultraviolet intensity and an alarm or solenoid valve that shuts off flow when output drops below the effective level.
Maintenance is not optional
Lamps lose output long before they stop lighting, so they are replaced on an annual cycle regardless of appearance. The quartz sleeve is cleaned on the same visit, gently and with the recommended solution, and the o-rings inspected. Keep a spare lamp on hand. Note also that a UV unit is protection for the household plumbing, not a cure for the well itself: if a test found coliform bacteria, the well and the pressure tank should be shock chlorinated and retested first, then the ultraviolet unit fitted to keep the supply clean. Does a UV system remove iron or hardness from well water?
No. Ultraviolet inactivates microorganisms and removes nothing. Iron, manganese, hardness and chemical contaminants need their own treatment stages ahead of it.
How often does the UV lamp need replacing?
Annually, even though it is still lighting. Ultraviolet output declines well before the lamp fails visibly, and the quartz sleeve is cleaned at the same time.
Do I still need to shock chlorinate the well?
Yes, if a test found bacteria. Shock chlorination treats the well and pressure tank; the ultraviolet unit then protects the water reaching the house from that point on.
What happens during a power cut?
The lamp goes out and untreated water can pass. Units with a solenoid valve shut off flow automatically; without one, the plumbing should be flushed and disinfected after an outage.
