Water passes through a chamber around a lamp held inside a quartz sleeve. Ultraviolet light at the germicidal wavelength damages the genetic material of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce, which is what makes them harmless to drink. Nothing is strained out and nothing is added, so the water leaving the chamber has the same chemistry as the water entering it. Because the effect depends on the light reaching the organism, the dose delivered is a product of lamp output, flow rate and how clear the water is, and all three have to be right at once.
Why pretreatment is not optional
Ultraviolet light is blocked by anything the water is carrying. Turbidity shades organisms from the lamp, iron and manganese coat the quartz sleeve with a film, and hardness scales it. Any of those cuts the delivered dose without the unit reporting a fault, so a UV system installed as the only stage on a dirty well is a light that looks like it is working while treating almost nothing.
