What is in an ultraviolet water filtration system

An ultraviolet water filtration system is a short list of parts doing one job: a stainless chamber, a lamp inside a quartz sleeve, a ballast that drives the lamp and, on better units, a sensor that watches the light. Water flowing through the chamber receives a dose of ultraviolet light that leaves bacteria, viruses and cysts unable to reproduce.

The components and what each one is for

The chamber is a polished stainless vessel with an inlet and outlet, sized so water spends a known amount of time beside the lamp. The lamp sits along the axis inside a quartz sleeve, sealed at both ends with O rings, so it is surrounded by water but never wetted. The ballast supplies the lamp and usually carries the lamp timer and the alarm. A quartz sensor, where fitted, measures how much light is actually reaching the far side of the water and warns when it falls. Everything else in the box is mounting hardware, unions and a spare set of O rings that you should keep rather than lose.

Sizing is by flow rate, not by house size

Because the dose depends on how long water stays in the chamber, a system is rated for a maximum flow. Size it against the peak demand your plumbing can produce, which is set by the pump and by how many fixtures run at once, not by bedrooms or by average daily use. A shower and a washing machine together are a realistic peak in most homes. Undersizing has no visible symptom: the light is on, the water flows, and the dose is simply below what is needed. Manufacturers publish flow ratings at a stated dose, and matching those ratings honestly to your worst case is the whole of correct sizing.

Pretreatment is part of the system

Ultraviolet light travels in straight lines through water and is blocked by anything cloudy. Sediment, iron, manganese and tannin color all cut the transmittance, and hardness and iron scale the outside of the quartz sleeve where you cannot see it. Every UV installation therefore has filtration ahead of it, at minimum a sediment cartridge and often iron treatment or softening as well. A system installed on raw well water without that pretreatment loses effectiveness within weeks while continuing to look exactly the same from the outside, which is why the pretreatment stages count as part of the UV system rather than as separate purchases.

Where it goes in the plumbing

The chamber is installed after the pressure tank and after all filtration, as the last stage before the water reaches the house, so nothing downstream can reintroduce organisms. Mount it where the lamp can be withdrawn along its full length, which means leaving clearance at one end equal to the chamber, and where it will not freeze. Fit shutoff valves either side and a union so the unit can be isolated for lamp changes without draining the house. Why wells are the usual application

Public supplies arrive already disinfected, so UV in a city home is normally about insurance or a specific event. On a private well the owner is the water utility, and the EPA is clear that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no one is sampling yours or telling you when the result changes. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. UV is the standard continuous answer to a well that tests positive for coliform bacteria, and it is chosen alongside testing rather than instead of it.
