Adding ultraviolet light for water system protection to an existing train

Adding an ultraviolet stage to a treatment train that already exists is a common upgrade, usually after a bacteria result or a change of use. It is also the retrofit most often bought before the practicalities are checked, and three of those decide whether the installation is straightforward or a rebuild of the plant room.

Find the right point in the pipework

The lamp goes last, after every filtration and treatment stage and as close as practical to where the water branches into the house, because ultraviolet leaves no residual and protects nothing upstream of itself. In an existing train that usually means cutting in after the final vessel and before the first branch, which is often a congested piece of pipework with little spare length. Measure the run you actually have before ordering, since a chamber that will not fit between the last vessel and the first tee means moving one of them.

Clearance, which catches people out

A chamber needs room at one end to withdraw the lamp and the quartz sleeve for the annual service, and on some units that clearance approaches the chamber's own length. A unit mounted neatly against a wall or into a corner that cannot be serviced without unbolting it is a unit that will not be serviced. Check the manufacturer's stated service clearance rather than the chamber's dimensions, and mount horizontally or vertically as the model allows to make that space available.

Power, and what happens when it is lost

The controller needs a dependable supply, and a lamp on a circuit that trips leaves the household drawing untreated water with nothing to indicate it. Fit a dedicated outlet where possible. Where nobody would act on an alarm, add a solenoid valve that closes the supply when the lamp fails, which converts a silent failure into an obvious one. Both of these are far easier to include during the retrofit than to add afterwards.

Check what the existing train delivers

A lamp inherits whatever the stages ahead of it produce. Before ordering, confirm the water reaching that point is clear: sediment filtration in good order, iron and manganese treated if present, hardness handled, and colour dealt with if the water is tannin stained. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a current test is the owner's job and is what tells you whether the existing train is adequate.
