Why well owners end up buying one

The EPA is clear that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody is testing a private supply on a schedule except the owner. That matters because a well can go from clean to coliform-positive after one wet spring, a cracked casing or a failed sanitary seal, with no change in taste, smell or appearance to warn anyone. It also leaves no residual disinfectant, so any bacteria that enter the plumbing downstream of the chamber, through a leak, a repair or a contaminated fixture, are not touched. And it does nothing while the power is out, which is why an alarm, a solenoid shutoff valve or both are worth having on a system that a family depends on. If your problem is taste, staining or scale rather than microbiology, UV is the wrong purchase entirely.

Living with the lamp

A UV lamp does not burn out at the end of its life, it dims. Output falls gradually while the light still looks fine to the eye, which is why manufacturers specify an annual lamp change and why the controller counts hours rather than waiting for a failure. The quartz sleeve is separate: it is cleaned, usually with a mild acid wipe, whenever the lamp is changed and sooner on water with any iron in it. Turn the power off, let the lamp cool, and never touch the glass with bare fingers, because skin oil bakes on and blocks light. Once the system is fitted, keep testing the water after it, because a UV system that has failed silently looks identical to one that is working.
