No residual, and what that means downstream

Chlorination leaves a residual disinfectant in the water that keeps working through the plumbing. Ultraviolet does not: water leaving the chamber is disinfected at that moment and has no protection afterward. In practice this is fine for a household, but it does mean bacteria can establish in stagnant sections of pipe, in a rarely used bathroom or in an untreated storage tank downstream. Keep the treated side of the system in regular use and avoid dead legs where water sits for months.

What ultraviolet cannot be asked to do

It does not remove chemicals, metals, nitrate, hardness, sediment or taste. It does not fix a well with a cracked casing, a failed sanitary seal or surface water finding its way in, and it should never be sold as a way to live with a contaminated source. If a well tests positive for bacteria repeatedly, investigate and repair the well, disinfect it, retest, and then fit ultraviolet as ongoing protection rather than as the fix.
